Oncology Massage

Oncology Massage does not treat cancer but it may reduce the side effects, caused by conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy and improve quality of life and feeling of well-being. Massage may assist in reducing:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Disturbed sleep

Due to its Gentle non-invasive nature Oncology Massage is safe at almost every stage in the cancer journey or while receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A shorter session time may be more suitable if the client is experiencing:

  • recent surgery
  • current infection
  • neutropenia- low white cell count-susceptible to infection
  • thrombocytopenia- low red count – may bruise easily

Oncology Massage therapists are trained to work safely with ports, catheters, stoma’s and wounds to ensure the treatment is comfortable and relaxing.

Always consult your doctor before embarking on any treatment program

Do people with cancer use massage?

While massage doesn’t treat the cancer itself, it may help reduce the side effects caused by conventional treatments and improve quality of life. As well as improving physical symptoms, some people with cancer choose to have a massage because it:

  • Allows them to feel whole
  • Share their feelings in a safe environment,
  • Feel positive re-building a passion for life.

Is massage safe for people with cancer?

Light, relaxing massage can safely be given to people at all stages of cancer. Tumor or treatment sites are not massaged, to avoid discomfort or too much pressure on the affected area and underlying organs.

Some people worry that massage can spread cancer cells throughout the body, However, massage of muscle and soft tissues does not spread cancer cells.

What to expect during your session

You will require a slightly longer first appointment in order to discuss where you are in your treatment cycle, types of cancer treatments you have had, are having and surgeries planned and/or completed.

Your positioning on the table will take into account any surgery sites, ports, catheters, tumors and any areas of discomfort. Cushions, pillows, bolsters and blankets will be used to position you comfortably to allow for complete relaxation.

First appointments are always booked for 75 minutes and will include the following:

  • A personalised treatment plan based on your desired outcome
  • Informed consent for treatment to take place
  • The massage treatment
  • Any follow-up appointments and/or referrals are discussed.

Subsequent appointments are generally 60 minutes, however 30, 45 and 90 minute appointments are available should you have more or less time available for each treatment.
