Remedial & Sports Massage Therapy

David Waters

David completed his Remedial Massage and Reflexology Diploma in 2007 and is very excited to be part of the team at Integrative Health Solutions.

When starting massage courses at The Australia College of Tactile Therapies he was a volunteer massage therapist at North Adelaide Football club, where he worked with the senior teams and overlooked the junior teams.

On completion of his diploma, he soon became the Head trainer. He coordinated the health needs of players with Doctors Chiropractors and Physiotherapists. David also enjoyed his role as the head trainer for the under 16 & 18 State Aussie Rules teams, as well as assisting the AFL teams as needed. David went on to work for two seasons at the Adelaide 36ers as a massage therapist.
During this time, David also had a private practice working with clients from all walks of life and various aches and pains.

David started in the health sector after a serious car accident left him with spinal and head injuries. At the time the future looked bleak, but he decided to take the injuries as a passion and not let it get him down. He challenged many barriers and created a new life. Even with these spinal injuries, he managed to run the Melbourne marathon 2 ½ years after the accident.

David likes to see the positives in life, challenge what is possible and is now blessed to have the opportunity to help people. In his spare time he is writing an autobiography on the 10 goals completed which were supposedly not possible. He enjoys walking to keep fit, spending time with his family and just being himself.

His favourite quote is:
Nothing is impossible the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!
Audrey Hepburn

Bowen Therapy

Sarah Trangmar

Bowen Therapy was developed by an Australian called Tom Bowen. It is a gentle technique which is safe to use for all ages and states of health. The gentle “rolling” action across the fibre frees muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia helping to induce a relaxation response. It allows the body to hydrate efficiently and improves blood and lymph flow.

The recipient wears soft, light clothing and receives the treatment through clothing. This technique may be useful for those suffering from Fibromyalgia, Chronic pain conditions, musculoskeletal and related neurological problems.

Oncology Massage

Sarah Trangmar

Oncology Massage is an adaptive gentle touch therapy. Each session is planned and adapted to the individual on the day. Oncology Massage training ensures that massage is modified and adjusted for any contraindications due to the disease and any treatment side effects.

Client safety and well being is paramount. Research shows that oncology massage reduces side effects experienced from conventional treatment of cancer and the symptoms of the disease process itself (Cassileth and Vickers 2004).

Sarah has worked as a therapist with the Cancer Care Centre in Unley, since 2004. In addition, she currently works in the Day Infusion Suite at Flinders Medical Centre, as an oncology massage therapist. Sarah has a broad range of skills and extensive training and experience. She welcomes new patients and will endeavor to accommodate urgent appointments and home visits where possible.

Scar Tissue (Adhesion) Massage

Sarah Trangmar

Working on scar tissue is always unique and individual, no two scars every respond the same, it is important to realize that you are working on a whole person with a scar. That scar represents a significant event in that person’s life and may have a large emotional component involved in its healing.

A scar is a reminder of our body’s miraculous ability to mend – however, the mending can be chaotic and haphazard resulting in discomfort, pain, restriction and self consciousness. A scar that on the surface has healed well and can barely be noticed can be chaotic beneath the surface creating lines of adhesion and fascial tension. The trauma associated with the event that resulted in the scar can have a long-term effect on the way the scar is perceived by the person, including the degree of pain and discomfort even after the original wound has “healed’.

I believe that there is much that can be achieved with manual touch therapy in alleviating the tension, adhesion, and structural pain lines that can be present with scarring. Of equal importance is the acknowledgment of the pain and trauma that may be associated, sometimes it may be worth working along side other strategies to help with the emotional pain eg hypnotherapy, art therapy, counseling, kinesiology.

The other aspect which I believe to be of utmost importance when working with scarring is not to rush or push too hard. The scar itself needs to dictate the pace, constant feedback from the person whilst working with the scar is paramount – this has to be teamwork. Some pain in its release is inevitable, however needs to be very carefully monitored so as not to create more tension both physically and emotionally. This will take time and patience from both practitioner and recipient!

As a practitioner, I find working with scar tissue both fascinating and rewarding – no two scars ever react or respond the same so it keeps me from becoming complacent! Examples may include: caeserian section scars, internal scars from surgery, endometriosis, external scars. This treatment can provide great relief to the tightness and pain from scar tissue.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage: (MLD)

Sarah Trangmar

    • Manually move fluid using very light and repetitive strokes
    • The aim of MLD is to stimulate the movement of lymph inside the lymphatic vessels and to decongest the swollen tissues by diverting the excess fluid to existing lymph nodes
    • Most experiences of MLD, are of a lighter and freer feeling in the affected area. This can occur over time or in each session
    • Can also be of help in recovery from injury and illness
