Who are your teachers?
Iyengar Yoga teachers are professionals, rigorously trained and assessed in accordance with international standards. Training takes several years and once qualified, teachers must have ongoing education to remain accredited.
Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher
Ruth has been teaching yoga for over 35 years and has been certified to teach Iyengar Yoga since 1982. She has studied with Mr. Iyengar and his family in India and elsewhere on numerous occasions and is a qualified teacher trainer and assessor.

Franziska has been practicing Iyengar Yoga for over 10 years and also teaches elswhere on the North Shore.
Penny Morse has been practicing Iyengar Yoga for over 25 years and has been teaching at the school for many years.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
Iyengar Yoga was developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar and is based in classical yoga tradition. A lifelong devoted practitioner, Mr Iyengar, is considered to be the world’s foremost exponent of this ancient art, science and philosophy.
How is Iyengar Yoga different from many other styles of Yoga?
- In Iyengar Yoga classes the strong emphasis on precision and alignment in the postures enables correct positioning of the skeletal and organic body and the proper functioning of the breath.
- Iyengar Yoga is methodical and systematic both in the introduction of new postures and in the sequencing of postures within the class.
- Iyengar Yoga offers a balance of dynamic and strengthening postures, passive and restorative ones, breathing and relaxation.
- In Iyengar Yoga classes the postures are sometimes held for longer periods to improve awareness and increase stamina.
- In Iyengar Yoga classes teachers not only demonstrate the poses but also correct the students verbally and at times physically
- In Iyengar Yoga classes the use of props enables stiff, injured, or older students
to do postures which would otherwise be difficult or impossible
- In Iyengar Yoga classes many individual physical problems and injuries are catered for within the class. Everyone does not necessarily do all the same postures.
Who can practise Iyengar Yoga?
You can practice Iyengar Yoga at any age, and do not have to be fit or flexible before you start.
Yoga postures can be modified to suit your needs, regardless of most physical restrictions and/or health problems.
