Weight Loss: A Radical New Approach
Clients often come to hypnotherapy for weight-loss expecting their will-power to be magically strengthened (and perhaps their appetite to be modified or regulated), as if their weight gain in the past has been due to their lack of will.
In my view, lack of will-power is not the reason for weight gain. In fact, I would have to say that people who have tried to lose weight in the past - particularly those who are continuously on and off diets - have more than their fair share of will-power. To follow the strict guidelines of some of the diets out there - even for a few days - takes enormous (even if misguided) will-power!
What I have found is that nearly all overweight clients have lost touch with their body’s signalling mechanisms. As a consequence:
They don’t know when they are genuinely hungry.
They don’t know when they are genuinely full.
They don’t know how to distinguish stomach hunger from mouth hunger, or indeed hunger from thirst or tiredness or general discomfort.
They don’t know how to recognise the body’s pleasure in certain foods.
They don’t know how to come to terms with some of their feelings, and thus use food as compensation. They eat to feel better because they don’t know how to distinguish emotional “good feelings” from the stomach’s feelings of satisfaction.
In other words, there is a high level of disconnection from the body’s messages.
Hypnosis helps you reconnect - effortlessly - with the wisdom of your body.
Virtual Gastric Banding
To assist clients manage their weight, while at the same time learning to re-connect with their body's signalling mechanisms, a Virtual Gastric Band can be installed.
Virtual Gastric Banding is a completely safe process whereby your stomach is led to believe through hypnosis that a "band" has been placed around its upper part. As with surgically installed gastric bands (or "lap-bands"), your stomach feels full with significantly smaller amounts of food. However, none of the constraints and limitations of a surgical band apply (eg risk of infection, the need to puree food, etc).
In brief, the Virtual Gastric Band procedure activates your "full" signal more quickly than normal, you feel satisfied with smaller amounts, and thus reduce your weight effortlessly. This feeling of fullness is also registered by your conscious mind as if a real gastric band were in place.
The process does NOT include dieting - you don't have to think about what foods to eat, but you will be eating much smaller amounts than normal, enabling the body to shed its excess weight - without feeling hungry or deprived.
The VGB procedure has been thoroughly researched, and has also been used in the UK with 90%+ success rates. In fact, the British National Health Service is considering trialling the procedure with the view to offering it as part of the NHS scheme.
With the VGB in place, your ability to hear your stomach's "full" signal is strengthened. As part of the process, your motivation to act on those messages is also strengthened (ie to stop eating when you recognise you are feeling full). At the same time you are encouraged to become more mindful of the eating process, eating more consciously and enjoying every mouthful. This training holds you in good stead for the rest of your life.
The 4 Key Areas for Weight Loss
The VGB procedure addresses 3 of the most significant aspects of weight loss:
1. Mindful eating (being fully present when you sit down to eat).
2. Re-programming the subconscious so that your body’s important signals can be “heard” (loud and clear).
3. Motivating you to work co-operatively with your body’s intelligence instead of treating the body as the enemy whose impulses to eat must be resisted and overcome.
The 4th key to weight-loss is self-acceptance: it is difficult to regard the body as a co-operative ally if you loathe and reject it. For this reason, building self-esteem and really learning how to like yourself (no matter what number the scales display) is a very important part of the weight-loss process.
Hypnosis can help build your self-esteem by re-directing your attention to your strengths (as opposed to your weaknesses), by turning down the volume on unhelpful, self-sabotaging internal conversations (“self-talk”), and by resolving buried emotional issues.
In working on all four of these key areas you learn how to eat only what your body requires (which may include the occasional treat); you feel motivated to exercise and make healthy food choices; and you learn to like yourself. You become your own best friend, and your body is honoured and valued as an ally, not an enemy.
In this way, you stand to gain not only slimness and health, but you can also bring into your life a whole new self with whom you can develop a loving, nurturing relationship.
