What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a form of complementary medicine which is similar to functional medicine in that it aims to treat the cause of an illness rather than the symptoms, by strengthening the body’s natural ability to cure itself.

It focuses on possible imbalances in the patient’s microbiome and/or diet, as well as taking into account any lifestyle issues that could be contributing to his or her presenting symptoms.

Qualified naturopaths complete a 4-year full-time course which covers the following subjects:

  • chemistry
  • biochemistry
  • pathology
  • symptomatology and diagnosis
  • anatomy and physiology

Modalities

  • homoeopathy
  • herbal medicine
  • nutrition
  • Bach Flower remedies
  • iridology
  • remedial massage.

Some naturopaths practise all of these modalities, other tend to specialise in only some of them. For example, many naturopaths may specialise in herbal medicine rather than in homoeopathy, others may combine nutrition with massage.

Dr. Julie works in the field of health psychology which combines the disciplines of naturopathy and psychology.

She will assess your particular condition by looking at your presenting symptoms and designing a treatment plan specifically for you. This may involve checking your diet and life-style and teaching you relaxation techniques to help you cope with stressful situations.

Psychological studies show that your mind and your body have a strong bi-directional link. As your mental health declines, your physical health can wear down; and if your physical health declines, it can make you feel, mentally and emotionally, "down."

“Our positive beliefs and negative beliefs not only impact our health,
but also every aspect of life… Your beliefs act like filters on a camera,
changing how you see the world. And your biology adapts to those beliefs.”
(Bruce Lipton “The Biology of Belief.”)
