What is the Bowen Therapy Technique ?
The Bowen Technique is a muscle and connective tissue therapy, producing rapid and lasting relief from pain and discomfort. The technique consists of a series of gentle precise moves on specific areas of the body. These gentle moves stimulate and balance the flow of circulation, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. There is no forceful manipulation, just a light cross fibre manoeuvering of muscle, tendon or ligament. It can be used safely on anyone from new-born to the aged.

Understanding Bowen Therapy
Each Bowen work move is done at the level of the superficial fascia. Fascia plays a very important role in maintaining structural integrity in the body. The fascia surrounds organs and other structures in the body such as muscles; it allows free movement and ‘glide’ between these structures as we move around. As a result of injury or inflammation, fascia becomes more contracted or even adhered, resulting in restriction around the adjacent tissue. The gentle stretching effect of the Bowen work on the fascia can result in the freeing up of adhesions and improved postural alignment, and circulatory enhancement to the effected tissues. The overall goal of Bowen treatments is to restore the body processes for self-healing.
History of Bowen Therapy
Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) began developing his technique in the 1950’s in Geelong, Australia. He became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects. Since then, over 20,000 therapists worldwide have taken Bowen training. In Australia, practitioners now have access to nationally recognized qualifications in Bowen Therapy through the Border College of Natural Therapies.
