Is acupuncture effective at relieving pain?

Acupuncture has been shown in studies to be beneficial in a variety of areas, including:

  • Menstrual pain
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Backache
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritic pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Chronic pain in general
  • Pain after surgery

It has also been shown to reduce reliance on pain medication. Cupping therapy is another complementary therapy that can be used to help with pain.

How can acupuncture help with headaches and migraines?

Migraines and headaches are two of the most common reasons people seek treatment from an acupuncturist. They  can be felt in a variety of ways, ranging from a mild annoyance when trying to concentrate at work to debilitating migraines that can last days each month. Severe migraines can have their own set of side effects, such as depression, fatigue, reliance on painkillers, having to miss work or social events, and a lower quality of life.

Headaches and migraines can both benefit from acupuncture. Recent studies have shown that it is effective in helping to decrease the occurrence of headaches and migraines, as well as their intensity and frequency when they do occur. It has been shown to be at least as effective as conventional migraine preventative medication, as well as safe, long-lasting and cost-effective.

How can acupuncture help with back pain?

Back pain is a very common complaint. It appears to affect roughly the same number of men and women. Low back pain has a variety of causes, but it is usually the result of an injury or a spine-related problem, such as:

  • Constant lifting of heavy objects
  • Poor posture
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Excess weight
  • Accidents such as falls or car accidents
  • Muscle tension due to stress
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoporosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Arthritis

Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment for low back pain. In fact, acupuncture has been shown to be more effective than a variety of other therapies for treating the pain and symptoms of low back injuries, including progressive muscle relaxation, manipulation, laser therapy, yoga and anti-inflammatory medications. Lachlan treats back pain holistically, and may use a variety of techniques to help relieve pain and tightness, such as acupuncture, cupping, heat therapy, electroacupuncture and massage.

Can acupuncture help with sciatica?

Pain that travels along the pathway of the sciatic nerve is called sciatica. It usually starts in the lower back or buttocks and spreads down the thigh, lower leg, and sometimes into your foot. It is often felt on the outside or back of your leg, but it can also be felt on the inside of your thigh. It is most commonly found in one leg, though it can occur in both legs simultaneously on rare instances.

Sciatica is typically caused by compression of the vertebral discs in your lower spine, which places pressure on the sciatic nerve. An acute injury, such as lifting a heavy object or twisting while carrying a heavy load, can sometimes cause sciatica. It can also gradually start and is frequently caused by prolonged sitting and poor posture.

Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment for sciatica, outperforming standard treatments such as pain relievers, manual therapy and physical rehabilitation.
