OSTEOPATHY

Osteopaths are primary health care practitioners that take a whole body approach to treatment. Treatment not only focuses on your complaint, but on related areas of the body which may be adding to your problem. This helps us to accurately understand why your problem is occurring.

Osteopaths are registered health professionals that have undertaken at least 5 years of university studies. Osteopathic training not only involves comprehensive studying of anatomy and physiology, but also biomechanics, pathology and clinical diagnosis.

Osteopaths are also equipped to provide rehabilitation post surgery, after sporting injuries and post pregnancy. We can work with you to develop a rehabilitative strengthening program to get you back to health as soon as possible.

We are accredited with Work Safe, TAC, DVA and eligible to participate in Enhanced Primary Care Plans through Medicare. Private health insurance rebates are also available for those with appropriate cover.

Dr. Melissa Ward

Melissa Ward is a registered Osteopath and member of the Australian Osteopathic Association. She graduated from Victoria University in 2003 after completing a Bachelor of Science (Clinical Science) and a Masters in Health Sciences (Osteopathy), and has worked in private practices around Melbourne since 2003. Her treatment techniques are quite structural, comprising of some joint manipulation, massage and other related soft tissue techniques, with a large emphasis on postural and ergonomic advice and stretching (where applicable).

Throughout treatment, Melissa aims to educate her clients on factors such as sleeping positions, workstation ergonomics, or correct lifting techniques to empower them to alter daily activities that may be contributing to their pain. Melissa treats a large number of pregnant women, throughout all stages of their pregnancy (using gentle techniques) and treats a lot of new mums with many musculoskeletal aches and pains. Having 2 children herself, she understand the importance of postural adjustments with feeding, bathing and settling babies that are sometimes overlooked in post natal care. In the scope of Osteopathy, Melissa treats all musculoskeletal aches and pains ranging from neck, back pain and headaches, to jaw pain and sinusitis, plantar fasciitis, and RSI of the wrist .

Melissa brings a wealth of knowledge to Lakes Boulevard Medical and is available for appointments Wednesday afternoons from 1pm until 5.30 pm.

Your Consultation

Most people consult Osteopaths for the treatment of muscle and joint aches and pains. Conditions such as neck and shoulder pain, headaches, back pain and sciatica are commonly treated as well as a multitude of sporting injuries, and pregnancy-related aches and pains. Osteopaths can also provide benefit to those suffering asthma, migraines and other medically diagnosed conditions. Please ask Melissa for further clarification if you feel she may be of any benefit to you.

You initial consultation will firstly involve the asking a series of questions about your pain or injury so that we can fully understand what the problem is, how and why it has occurred, and why it has not resolved itself. Once we know why your pain is there, we can tailor an individual treatment plan to you. Secondly, we will examine and treat your pain, addressing not only the painful and tight areas that you complain of, but also other related areas that you probably didn’t know were sore. Thirdly, we will explain your problem to you, and provide you with practical advice that will not only help you manage your current problem but also prevent it from occurring in the future. Some people find they only need a few consultations, some with more persistent problems require more. A management plan and treatment approach will be discussed with you at the time of consultation.

Some treatment modalities such as deep tissue massage or other soft tissue modalities or manipulation can be painful when being addressed by your Osteopath. Tolerable pain levels differ from person to person, so if you find that the treatment is too painful for you to manage, please give Melissa feedback and she can adjust her pressure. In some instances, where your problem is quite chronic in nature, deeper muscle work or slightly stronger techniques may be required to address more deeper structures. Melissa will always explain why and what she is doing, but feel free to mention any concerns that you have at any time throughout the consultation.

Melissa brings a wealth of knowledge to Lakes Boulevard Medical and is available for appointments Wednesday afternoons from 1pm until 5.30 pm ans appointments can be made by calling her on 0457 641 057.
