What is Laughter Yoga?
Let’s begin with what it isn’t! It has nothing to do with being a stand-up comedian who aces Open Mic nights at the local pub. In actual fact, Laughter Yoga doesn’t rely on jokes or humour at all. And it doesn’t involve you bending yourself into a pretzel either.
Over 20 years ago, an Indian physician Dr Madan Kataria combined deep cleansing breaths of yoga with playful exercises that brought on laughter. Hence the name, Laughter Yoga. In a group setting, Dr Kataria discovered that laughter soon become real and profound. Also discovering that when deep belly laughs were sustained for around 20 minutes (interspersed with deep breathing), amazing health benefits were observed. These benefits have now been scientifically proven.
