What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the first documented comprehensive medical science. It has two terms, Ayu means ‘Life’ and Veda means ‘Knowledge’.

According to Ayurveda, wellness is not a bad way to keep the body clear of illnesses, but it is an optimistic one that has a continuous sense of physical, mental and spiritual pleasure.

Ayurveda is made up of 8 subjects:

  1. Agad Tantra & Vyavahara Ayurveda (Jurisprudence & Toxicology)
  2. Bal Roga (Pediatrics)
  3. Bhoot Vidya and Grah (Science of Demonic Seizures Psychology)
  4. Kaya Chikitsa (Medicine)
  5. Rasayana & Vajikarana Tantra (Rejuvenation & Aphrodisiacs)
  6. Prasuti Tantra and Stri Rog (Gynecology & Obstetric)
  7. Shalya Tantra (Surgery)
  8. Shalakya Tantra (Ophthalmology & ENT)

Ayurveda is the best guide for people who are ill and balanced. The most effective and cheaper are ayurvedic medicines. Many of the empirical treatment methods employed by many Ayurvedic physicians are very useful.

Principles of Ayurveda / Doshas: Vata Pitta Kapha

The doshas are bioenergies that are present in the entire human mind and body. We control both physical and mental activities and provide wellness to fulfillment programs for all living beings.

Ayurveda believes that the five components, Prithvi (Earth) and Jala (Water), Teja (Fire), Vayu (Air), and Aakash (Ether), consist of all living and nonliving things throughout the universe. Even the human body comprises of those components recognised as the panchamahabhutas.

Vata Dosha

The elements combine to form the dominant elements of Ether and Air which is called Vata Dosha in Ayurveda. In the mind and in the body, Vata governs every move. It controls blood flow, waste removal, breathing and thought movement across the mind.

Pitta Dosha

The primary components in Pitta Dosha are Fire and Water. All sun, digestion, and regeneration of mind and body are regulated by Pitta.

Kapha Dosha

The primary components of Water and Earth form the Kapha Dosha. In mind and body, Kapha controls both structure and lubrication. It tracks weight, development, joint and lung lubrication and the creation of all seven tissues: nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues.

We are all composed of Vata, Pitta and Kapha in special proportions. These Doshas ratios vary in each person and because of this Ayurveda, each person sees our diversity as a specific mix.

Some primary Ayurvedic values, alluded to briefly, are:

  • Agni
  • Dhatus
  • Mala
  • Srotas

The Three Doshas’ Balance and Harmony

The Ayurvedic physical health framework centers around its three stages, which are specifically designed to help hold people in a balanced state and thus prevent disease.

Ayurvedic treatment can be widely divided into two:

  • Shodhana Chikitsa (Purification Therapy) - This involves removing the harmful by-products produced from specific medical methods in the body.
  • Shamana Chikitsa (Alleviating Therapy) - This includes the use of herbal medicinal products, both outside and within, and thus restores normality without elimination.

Good health in the Ayurvedic system also starts with good digestion and relies on balanced, young, tasty and simple foods. This method is radically different from the usual Western medicine, which relies mainly on pharmaceutical treatments that cause our bodies and coerced us to render our appeals.
