Lisa Higgins - Lymphatic Drainage & Massage Therapy
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle manual technique which helps restore the body's balance by effectively clearing toxins from the body, as well as helping to reduce fluid retention from a variety of causes ranging from PMT, oedema, lymphoedema, sinusitis, pre and post surgery or injury. It is particularly effective in reducing lymphoedema post cancer. Regular treatment can help to boost the immune system. MLD is tolerated well by patients who may find other forms of massage too painful. It is a slow, rhythmical treatment which makes it relaxing and therapeutic at the same time.
Lisa also uses MLD to treat Lipoedema, a commonly misdiagnosed condition affecting up to 11% of the female population (exact figures are unknown). Lipoedema mainly affects the legs but can affect the arms and abdomen as well. It is a painful fat syndrome which is progressive. The fat in affected limbs is soft and bruises easily and the lower body can be a disproportionate size to the upper, with a small waist. Changes to the limbs can be triggered by hormonal changes, ie, puberty, pregnancy or menopause. A healthy, anti-inflammatory diet seems to help with the pain levels though not with weight loss on the affected limbs. Lisa teaches self-care techniques to help manage the condition and advises on compression and other maintenance tools. For more information on lipoedema go to lipoedemaaustralia.com.au

The MLD treatment is given to a partially undressed client and careful draping is always applied. Powder may be used during the treatment.
