Happiness Sadness

Aikido, the art of harmony, was developed between 1920 and 1960, by Morihei Ueshiba. He is known as O’Sensei, or ‘Great Teacher’. Aikido was O'sensei's life work, a journey that blended intense physical training, with deep philosophical and spiritual insights.

The basis of Aikido lies in the ability to harmonise in conflict. A simple example is that rather than trading strikes with our attacker, Aikido teaches us to use the force of the attack to apply technique and subdue. This is what makes Aikido perfect for both men and women, and for people with different levels of strength. It’s not about brute force; it’s about understanding force.

What is the difference between Aikido and sports?

The idea behind Aikido is fundamentally different. Aikido does not focus on winning or beating someone. It is a process of discovering that the only person we must beat is the limited idea of ourselves. It seeks not to make children 'winners' or 'fighters' but instead teaches them to embrace all aspects of what it is to be human. Everyone experiences success and failure, ups and downs, happiness and sadness. Aikido provides children with the foundation to accept this natural process rather than resist it and suffer.
