Chinese medicine is used to obtain an optimal state of health and well being. It is a very holistic form of medicine, aiming to bring the body back to a state of balance by addressing the root cause of problems rather than just focusing on the expression of symptoms.

About Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is a system of medicine developed in China, it’s thought to date back between 3-4,000 years. It is considered to be the oldest form of traditional medicine and is still the most utilized medical system in the world today.

The two main forms of TCM are Acupuncture, which is the insertion of very fine needles under the skin and Chinese Herbal medicine, which involves taking a ‘formula’ of between 3-15 herbs to address specific health problems. Herbs can be taken in raw, powdered or pill form.

WHAT CAN TCM TREAT?

TCM has a long and proven record for treating disorders such as:
  • Womens health - menstrual disorders, fertility, period pain, hormonal imbalances

  • Insomnia - Difficulty getting to sleep and easy waking

  • Stress - Mental and physical

  • Emotional imbalances – Depression, anxiety

  • Digestive Disorders – irritable bowel, allergies, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea etc..

  • Muscular-Skeletal problems - knee and back pain, neck tension, chronic fatigue, arthritis

  • Sports injury management - acute and chronic problems

  • Skin conditions

SO HOW DOES IT WORK?

In very simple terms, Acupuncture and Chinese herbs work to restore balance within the body. They encourage the body to heal itself and can strengthen immune and body biosystem function, from a base level. The aim of Chinese medicine and Acupuncture is to address the cause of disease and ill health rather than just cover up the symptoms.

TCM is a holistic form of medicine. This means that your Practitioner will look closely at your overall health, this includes diet, lifestyle, work and domestic environments to name a few.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Most people tend to describe the feeling as strange but not painful, however, every person is different. At most points, people describe feeling nothing, sometimes you can feel a slight prick initially then it can range from being like a dull ache to a gentle tingling sensation.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TREATMENT?

This really depends on the type of problem being treated and how long the patient has suffered with it. Often a good result can be seen after just one treatment, with other problems, it can take several weeks to start to see effects.

As a general rule, 4 weekly sessions are recommended to start with and then possibly fort nightly or monthly until the condition had well and truly stabilized. Once resolved It is a good idea to have regular checkups every 3 months or so, to prevent any little issues from turning into problems.
