What Is Bowen Therapy?
Tom Bowen was a Geelong based therapist who originated a unique style of physical therapy that now bears his name. Mr Bowen was treating up to 13,000 people a year in his Geelong clinic for a wide variety of complaints.
Bowen Therapy (BT) is characterised by gentle moves that occur on muscle bellies, ligaments and origins and insertions of muscles that cause, through neuromuscular mechanisms, profound relaxation in affected areas.
How Does Bowen Therapy Work?
BT not only affects the muscular system but also the nervous system so as to bring about dramatic change in presenting complaints. Bowen therapy is the physical therapy of choice for Parkinson’s disease and also recommended for the following complaints.
Back pain and sciatica
Digestive and bowel problems
Earache and TMJ problems
Migraines and other forms of headache
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
Hip, knee and foot problems
Menstrual and hormonal irregularities
Neck and shoulder problems
(including “ frozen shoulder” )
Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
Respiratory problems and hay fever
RSI, carpal tunnel syndromes and tennis elbow
Bedwetting in children
Sports and other traumatic injuries
Delayed onset muscle soreness ( DOMS)
What To Expect During a Bowen Therapy Session?
BT moves are quite gentle yet they can affect profound results.Generally there is no pain with the moves, occasionally areas that are very tight can produce momentary discomfort when they are released, and this discomfort would be no more than a second in duration.
Clients are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing, tracksuit pants and t shirts are perfect, jeans or rather denim is too hard a fabric to do effective work through.
There are rest breaks built into BT and the rationale for these is to give the body a chance to process the work that has proceeded. Some schools of BT advocate that the client be in their underwear and draped for optimum results but in my experience there isn’t that much of a difference, if any, in the clinical outcome between these two approaches. From my point of view client comfort and relaxation come before any rigid adherence to beliefs that have no clinical significance.
Bowen sessions generally last up to an hour and it is usual to have two treatments a week apart and then another session two weeks after the second one. For most problems this is enough, obviously more chronic problems may take a little longer.
