PILATES CLASSES

All sporting movement needs a stable base, a strong core to work from. Pilates is a form of exercise which focuses on building strength in your body’s basic postural and control muscles. For some sports injuries pilates is the ideal complement to physiotherapy, multiplying the remedial effect by building a strong core as a platform to enhance effective recovery and efficient athletic development.

A stronger core through pilates is a solid base to getting you back on track.

......................................................................

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on building the strength and endurance of our core postural muscles. As a stable base is developed Pilates also works to improve the co-ordination and efficiency of our global strength muscles. It was originally developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates and traditionally uses mat-based exercises, as well as specialised equipment, to improve alignment, posture, strength and co-ordination.

......................................................................

HOW DOES PHYSIOTHERAPY COMBINE WITH PILATES?

Current physiotherapy research into exercise and rehabilitation has contributed to the development from the traditional Pilates exercises to what is the modern Pilates of today.

Physiotherapists at our Centre have a specialised eye for assessing and developing Pilates-based exercise regimes that are tailored to the exact needs of the individual. They combine ideas from current physiotherapy research and that of traditional Pilates to ensure the exercises are safe, efficient and effective.

This makes Pilates at our centre ideal for rehabilitation after injury and for injury prevention and general strength and co-ordination.

......................................................................

WHO IS SUITED TO PILATES?

Pilates specifically focuses on improving postural endurance, stability, alignment and co-ordination. Hence it can provide benefits for those with injuries associated with instability and weakness, including low back and hip pain, thoracic and neck complaints. Pilates can also address the underlying causes of postural pains. As the programmes are individualised they can be developed to suit people of any age or fitness level from elite athletes through to post-surgical rehabilitation and senior’s fitness.

......................................................................

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Initial Pilates sessions will involve a thorough assessment with a physiotherapist in order to determine which exercises are appropriate to prescribe for your body.

One-on-one explanation and demonstration of exercises is required to ensure correct activation of muscles and to prevent “bad habits” or overuse of tight muscles. Often real-time ultrasound is used to help this.

After the initial one-on-one sessions you will be able to progress to small group or mat classes. We use Pilates equipment (Trapeze Table and Reformers), as well as mat work and rehabilitation exercise equipment.

Wear comfortable clothing to exercise in. However Pilates is not a cardio workout!

Sessions normally run from forty-five minutes to one hour.

......................................................................

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO SOME PILATES AT HOME?

Yes! To achieve results it is best to include some home-based rehabilitation exercises.

When possible, demonstration of home exercises will be included in your Pilates sessions.
