About Me

Sherin Omran
Master of Counselling, Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling

I hold a Master of Counselling degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling from the School of Health Sciences at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. I am also a member of the Australian Counselling Association.

I am an experienced and intuitive transformational counsellor and life coach with a background that covers a range of theoretical models. I have helped clients with relationship issues, career and personal development, major life changes, goal achievement, family concerns, stress management and many other issues.

An earlier background working for international corporations and government agencies has given me direct experience and insight not only into what it takes to succeed, but also the importance of balance, perspective and creating meaning and fulfilment in one’s life. I am also a trained EMDR practitioner.

How I work

I take a holistic approach and tailor counselling and coaching sessions for each individual I see. I use a range of therapeutic techniques depending on the particular concern, including mindfulness, guided imagery, free drawing, sand tray and Gestalt work.

Each person has a unique life story and problems, and I work in a manner which honours and respects these differences. This includes being mindful of cultural differences. I work with people from many varied cultures, backgrounds and walks of life. I place high value on personal authenticity and aim to help my clients align themselves to their highest values, which leads to greater peace and happiness in their lives.

I am fully insured and adhere to the Australian Counselling Association ethical frameworks.

I hold a Working With Children Check and National Police Clearance.

EMDR Therapy

I am a trained Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. Extensive research has shown that EMDR therapy can help people achieve the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to attain, in a much shorter time frame.

EMDR therapy is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Stress

  • Grief and loss

  • Disturbing memories

  • Emotional, verbal, physical and sexual abuse

  • Phobias

How EMDR works

When a person is involved in a distressing event, they may feel overwhelmed and their brain may be unable to process the information normally. The distressing memory seems to become ‘frozen’ on a neurological level. When a person recalls this memory, they can re-experience what they saw, heard, smelt, tasted or felt, and this can be quite intense. Sometimes the memories are so distressing, the person tries to avoid thinking about the event to avoid experiencing the associated feelings.

Some people find that the memories come to mind when something reminds them of the distressing event. It may also be that the memories just seem to pop into mind. The alternating left-right stimulation of the brain with eye movements, sounds or taps during EMDR, seems to stimulate the frozen or blocked information processing system.

In the process, the distressing memories seem to lose their intensity, so that the memories are less upsetting and become more like 'ordinary' memories. The effect is believed to be similar to that which occurs naturally during REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) when your eyes rapidly move from side to side. EMDR helps reduce the distress of all the different kinds of memories, whether it was what you saw, heard, smelt, tasted, felt or thought.
