What is Laughter Yoga?

“Hearty laughter is a good way to jog internally without having to go outside”

- Norman Cousins, author of ‘Anatomy of an Illness’.

Laughter Yoga is a unique exercise routine which combines unconditional laughter with yogic deep breathing (Pranayama), stretching and child-like playfulness, all whilst maintaining eye contact within the group.

Laughter Yoga is also the only technique that allows adults to achieve sustained hearty laughter without involving cognitive thought. It bypasses the intellectual systems that normally act as a brake on natural laughter.

............................................................................................................................

How Did it Start?

It started in 1995 in India by a medical doctor Dr. Madan Kataria whose own research into the benefits of 'laughter the best medicine' discovered that the brain cannot distinguish the difference between acted laughter and genuine, spontaneous, hearty laughter. His research was inspired by previous laughter pioneers such as Norman Cousins, author 'Anatomy of an Illness' and Stanford University Psychiatrist Dr William Fry, amongst many others.

Dr. Kataria field tested his research findings on the general public in a local Mumbai park and the first 'Laughter Club' was born. There are now over 5000 Laughter Clubs internationally.

What Are The Benefits of Laughter?

Research studies have proven laugher to have a postive effect on the cardiovascular and respiratory system (similar to exercise). Dr. Fry showed that hearty genuine, laughter causes our brain to produce endorphins as a part of our natural relaxation response, which reduces pain and increases pleasure in the body. Thereby promoting feelings of optimism, happiness, relaxation and social connection and bonding. All of these help to maintain a healthy immune system and reduce stress in the mind and body.

What Can You Expect In A Laughter Yoga Giggleshop

The Giggleshop starts with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping and body movement. The body movement is important as ‘motion creates emotion’. These help to break down inhibitions and develop feelings of child-like playfulness. Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter, followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualisation techniques with playfulness. These exercises, when combined with the strong social dynamics of group behaviour, lead to prolonged hearty unconditional laughter. In between each exercise deep breathing and stretching is done to open up the lungs to allow the body to take in more oxygen and help stretch out muscle tissue in the body.

The Giggleshop finishes with a ‘laughter meditation’. This is a session of unstructured laughter whereby participants either sit or lie down and allow natural laughter to flow from within them like a fountain. This can be a powerful experience that leads to a healthy emotional catharsis and a feeling of release and joyfulness that can last for days. The laughter meditation is often followed by a guided relaxation meditation.

A Giggleshop runs for 90 minutes but can be modified to suit your audience.

............................................................................................................................

Can Anyone Participate?

Generally yes, although being a form of exercise some physical strain and a rise in intra-abdominal pressure is involved and this may not suit everyone.

Also, it may not be suited for those with a serious physiological or psychological illness unless it has been approved by their physician and discussed with me beforehand.

Laughter Yoga can be a powerful natural form of healing but it should not be considered as a substitute for medical advice.

"Dear Tippy

On behalf of the Italian Catholic Federation, I would like to thank you for your presence and your excellent laughter session last Wednesday.

I received many comments about the wonderful time everyone had with both morning and afternoon sessions. I hope some of the people continue with the laughter yoga be it with you or elsewhere.

However, the important thing is that the day was a success and people were out there enjoying themselves and learning new things.

Once again thank you for your joyous disposition and the ability to make us all laugh and forget our stresses.

God bless
Connie Massadi"
