Myofascial Cupping Therapy is a form of remedial massage treatment combining and using Myofascial Release Therapy and Trigger Point Therapy. Myofascial Cupping Therapy is unlike all other massage techniques that use compression, it is unique in that it ‘lifts and separates’ soft tissue, known as negative or tensional pressure. This in turn can increase nutrient rich blood supply  to the tissue, while giving a gentle passive stretch to the underlying soft tissue.

Benefits from the Myofascial Cupping Technique

The Myofascial Cupping Therapy can provide profound benefits, particularly with assisting the body in maintaining Range of Motion, eliminating Myofascial Trigger Points, and reducing restrictive and sometimes painful fascial adhesions commonly found from repetitive movement originating from sports and the workplace. By reducing fascial adhesions, while encouraging optimal hydration levels of soft tissue, the Myofascial Cupping Technique can assist in reducing the incidence of injury and maintaining functional soft tissue.

How does it work?

Using silicone cups, they are placed on the skin, creating a slightly pressurised seal drawing up superficial muscle into the cup stimulating the circulation of blood, breaking up adhesions, and creating a pathway for toxins to be drawn out of the body through the lymphatic system.

Myofascial Cupping Therapy is being widely used in athletic training, physical therapy, and remedial massage therapy clinics. It was recently used in the 2016 Rio Olympic games for pre- and post-competition recovery and detoxification.

It is used specifically to decompress adhesion’s and scar tissue, relax muscles in spasm, decrease trigger point pain, and decrease tissue changes and inflammation following trauma. Cumulative treatments increase muscle endurance, circulation, increase lymphatic drainage and enhances overall ability to recover from workouts and strenuous activity.

Myofascial Cupping Therapy uses cups specifically used for ‘dragging’ or ‘gliding’. A special massage oil is placed on the skin first and the cups are gently moved across the skin, usually along meridians or fascia / muscle planes.

What does it actually do?

At a basic level, cupping improves the blood flow to the cupped areas and this can speed up healing and ease muscle soreness. Used after strenuous physical exercise, cupping can help to reduce the severity of post-exercise and delayed onset muscle soreness, allowing athletes to train harder for longer.

It can provide relief from chronic ailments

Cupping has also been shown to reduce the symptoms in conditions like chronic neck and shoulder pain, as well as reducing the severity of coughs and painful breathing.

It can make you feel good

Many people feel happy after a cupping session as it’s believed to release endorphins as well as to promote healing. Some practitioners oil the skin before applying the cups so they can be moved around in a form of massage.

Benefits of Myofascial Cupping Therapy:

  2.  Stimulates oxygenation and detoxification of blood
  3.  Increases joint range of motion
