What is Pilates?

Pilates (pronounced puh-lah-teez) is a form of body conditioning developed in the 1920s by the now legendary Joseph Pilates. Pilates focuses on the connection between the mind and the physical body and promotes overall wellness across the body systems.

Pilates encourages musculoskeletal health and balance utilising a broad range of exercises on specialised equipment as well as traditional floor/matwork. Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the body and in doing so promote overall body and postural awareness. The exercises work to lengthen and elongate muscles creating a streamlined and optimally functioning body.

Pilates sessions are just as suitable for people who have never exercised in their lives as they are for avid, healthy athletes. Pilates helps to prevent injuries and deconditioning and is also useful in injury rehabilitation. One of the beauties of Pilates is that it is easily modifiable and adaptable to suit different bodies and conditions. Taking part in Pilates sessions in our specialised studio with a well qualified instructor means that your program is designed specifically for you.

The Pilates method is a fun and inspiring way to exercise and achieve wellness, with an infinite number of exercises in the Pilates studio. You will leave the studio feeling longer, leaner, more balanced and invigorated!
