What is Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine? And how might it benefit your health and well-being?
Traditional Chinese medicine encompasses many therapeutic techniques including acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese dietetics and exercise therapy, Chinese herbal medicine, massage, cupping and guasha.
TCM and acupuncture is thought to have first originated over 2500 years ago and has become increasingly popular in Australia over the last 50 years. TCM prides itself on being an holistic treatment that may benefit a whole host of issues in both the body and mind.
Acupuncture uses the insertion of very fine, disposable needles along acupuncture points or meridians on the body to influence the normal flow of energy or 'Qi', circulate blood and fluids, alleviate stagnation and so much more to promote an individual's health and wellbeing.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Although some sensations may be felt with the insertion of needles into the skin, acupuncture very rarely induces a pain response and is considered safe when conducted by a registered acupuncturist or Chinese medicine practitioner.
What can I expect from a TCM consultation?
Thorough questioning and physical examination such as muscle testing, palpation and observing the tongue and pulse will help the practitioner determine what is the underlying cause of the symptoms you are experiencing. The practitioner will then insert needles or apply pressure to certain points on the body and may apply moxibustion (heat) to the end of the needles or perform other techniques such as massage, cupping or guasha. You may be prescribed some Chinese herbs or receive dietary, lifestyle and exercise advice to help assist you with your health needs.
