I believe through art therapy, we can help....

Whenever someone tells me that their child is being harassed or excluded at school my heart breaks. Bullying is sadly a part of life that in most cases is caused by people’s own deep-seated insecurities and creates insecurities in others. I want to break that negative cycle.

A Little About Me

Diploma course in Transpersonal Art Therapy
Accredited art therapist with the Australian Association of Holistic and Transpersonal Counsellors (AAHTC)
I was born and brought up in London, England and moved to Sydney in 1998 after studying art for several years and having completed a BA degree in Visual Communication in Photography. I worked for a while as a Medical Photographer before becoming a mother to two delightful girls.

Motherhood re awakened a long-term interest in the healing powers of art and the desire to use art to help people. I would watch my babies getting enormous pleasure from scribbling and playing with pencils, paints, sand and play doh long before they could walk or talk, which led me to question the importance of art on our psychological development.

I am now a working artist, but it didn’t become apparent that I had any talent in this area until my teens.

When I was 12 I became overwhelmed by negative emotions as a result of spiteful behaviour from some girls at school. Unable to voice the range of feelings that accumulated out of that, I picked up a note pad and secretly started drawing whatever came up. It was difficult at first because I felt self conscious that I lacked art skills, but pretty soon I discovered that art could be cathartic. My drawings also helped me to understand in more depth what was happening in my world. I became interested in the possibility that other young people could benefit from art and not have to feel as badly about themselves as I did. In my case, quite unexpectedly, I also found out I was developing a talent for art.

When my first daughter began kindergarten 8 years ago, my feelings about my school years re-surfaced and I was fearful that she would have similar experiences. This led me to study and complete a diploma course in Transpersonal Art Therapy at The College of Complementary Medicine in Sydney. A large part of my training was experiential, encouraging me to address my own unresolved issues, many of which had lain dormant and unchallenged beneath the surface since High School. I never cease to be amazed by how powerful a healing tool art therapy is.

All this time I have never lost sight of my childhood intent - to use art to help school kids who feel really crappy because of the bullies. Similarly I also want to help the adults who still, on a deeper level, believe the things those bullies said to them so many years before.
