Stress plays a huge role in the onset of illness. Our lives are so busy all the time and we very rarely give ourselves the opportunity for sufficient rest. Cortisol is a hormone that is released when our bodies are stressed, in what is known as ‘fight or flight’. When cortisol floods our system constantly health issues such as anxiety, depression and insomnia can arise. A 2005 study has shown that urinary or salivary cortisol levels were reduced by 31% following massage therapy, with an increase in ‘happy hormones’ serotonin and dopamine of approximately 30%.
As well as making you feel more relaxed, massage therapy is good for promoting blood and lymph flow through the system, increasing oxygen content in the blood up to as much as 15%.
