What Is Rolfing?
Rolfing is a technique developed by Dr. Ida Rolf. It is aimed at re-establishing the natural alignment and structural integration of the human body for vitality and wellbeing. This takes place over a series of ten sessions of around 90 minutes per session.
The techniques of Rolfing involve slow, deep stretching around joints, lengthening of shortened, bunched tissues and freeing up stuck, frozen tissues so that your body moves in the way it was meant to.
What Does Rolfing Training Involve?
The Rolf Institute was founded in 1971 in Boulder, Colorado by Dr. Ida Rolf, who held a doctorate in biochemistry. All Rolfers are certified through the Institute and trainings are held in America, Europe, Brazil and Australia.
Rolfing is a postgraduate course for individuals who have completed the required coursework in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, have demonstrated an ability in hands-on work such as massage and who have the maturity and sensitivity to work with people using this technique.
Most Rolfers would take a minimum of 2 years to complete their prerequisites prior to basic training with a further seven years of continuing education culminating in the advanced training.
Why Try A Rolfing Treatment?
Along with the physical freedom, most people experience a marked degree of emotional freedom and wellbeing. This occurs because we all hold onto emotional tension which manifests itself as stress and fear. The Rolfing process, whilst balancing our overlying structure, also allows our whole inner system to settle into balance, this gives us more energy and reduces stress. You would normally start feeling these benefits from the first session.
Benefits Of Rolfing
The benefits are as varied as the circumstances that create problems in our lives. All manner of soft tissue, joint or ligament problems that can occur in our bodies can be alleviated with Rolfing.
Systemic problems that occur with breathing, circulation, digestion and generally the functioning of organs may be caused, triggered or affected by poor, compressed, collapsed posture. Realigning our structure can therefore remove some symptoms.
Conditions That Can Be Treated
People of all ages have Rolfing, from early childhood to 90 year olds. We are energetic, living, organic, changing beings. Thus we are capable, through life's experiences, of creating imbalances, physical pain, emotional pain and lethargy in our bodies. People come to Rolfing for many and varied reasons. These include the following:
- Poor posture
- Joint pain
- Breathing difficulties
- Improving performances
- Emotional Wellbeing
- Post partum
- Anti-stress & sleep problems
What To Expect
Each session has its own goals, although the sessions are very much tailored to your own body structure and emotional process. Rolfer and client work together as a team to allow more flexibility, mobility and fluidity into your system.
You will feel a lift up through the centre of your body as the joints float out of their collapsed state. You will also be shown how to sit and walk in order to maintain your new body.
How Do I Start?
To see if Rolfing is for you, call us on (03) 9888 4119 and schedule your first session. Michael or Kathryn can talk to you further about how this can be scheduled and specifically how Rolfing can help you. After three sessions you will be in a position to know if completing the ten sessions is for you. There is no obligation to complete the ten sessions. An open enquiring mind and the desire to take responsibility for your health are an important consideration.
