Cupping

Cupping is another practice of TCM which involves attaching suction cups to the skin of soft tissue areas – such as shoulders, back and thighs. Cups can be used in the treatment of many conditions, such as:

  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Back pain
  • Stiff neck
  • Sports injuries
  • Chest problems and
  • Cold and flu symptoms.

The only side effect from cupping that occur in some cases are some minor bruises that only last a few days. The bruises generally do not hurt at all and the application of Zen liniment at the end of the treatment ensures complete dispersion of the bruise in 2 – 3 days.
After a treatment of cupping, the patient is noticeably relaxed and areas of pain appear less inflamed. Range of movement is increased and for colds and flu symptoms are relieved.

Moxibustion, or Moxa

Moxa is is a dried herb called mugwort. It can take two forms – natural dried moxa or prepared “smokeless” moxa. The moxa is either placed either on the head of the needle or a moxa stick is held by the practitioner and level of warmth is monitored by the practitioner. We also use “stick-on” moxa: small cylinders of rolled up moxa stuck on a piece of cardboard. These are placed on areas of pain and are removed when the patient starts to feel the heat. The burning of the moxa causes a warming in the area it is applied to stimulate the flow of qi and blood.
