SATVA ~ Natural Way of Living
Welcome to SATTVA, an Ayurveda and Wellness Clinic by Dr. Gayatri Marwah.

Stress, poor diet and modern technology play a significant role in the decline of health today. My focus is on preventive health as well as supporting the body when affected by acute or chronic ailments. This is done with the use of herbal remedies and natural therapies to encourage the body's own healing ability.

I help you find the right solution to your health concerns by understanding what your individual needs are and tailoring a treatment plan which is both achievable and practical for daily use. According to Ayurveda, most of the diseases can be prevented by slight changes in diet and lifestyle.

My consultations provide you to achieve the best health you possibly can and to better understand any underlying causes of ill health.

I only use natural therapies to help you find the most appropriate health solutions, sometimes in combination (including Yoga techniques, breathing exercises, diet regimen and herbal medicine). No drugs or medical procedures are carried out or used, only wholesome nutritional guidance - if needed, herbs, natural remedies and lifestyle management techniques.

Ayurveda
What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the oldest healing science in the world it is the traditional Indian holistic medical system, based on achieving physical and mental harmony with the nature; it is being practised for more than 5000 years.

Ayurveda means "science of life" ("Ayu" meaning life and "Veda" meaning science) or practices of longevity and has been mentioned in the Vedas, the world's oldest surviving literature.

Ayurvedic writing is based on the Samkhya philosophy of creation ("Sat" meaning truth and "Kha" meaning to know). Ayurveda was created during times of great enlightenment and prosperity when the sages of ancient India discovered truth by means of religious practices and disciplines, including Yoga and meditation.

For several thousand years their teachings were passed on orally from teacher to student; about the fifth to sixth century BC, elaborately detailed texts were written.

Ayurveda aims at making a happy, healthy and peaceful society. The two most important aims of Ayurveda are:
  • To maintain the health of healthy people
  • To cure the diseases of sick people.
Although Ayurveda can be used to alleviate various conditions, it is founded on the principle of preventing disorders in the long term rather than waiting for problems to manifest themselves. Thus, it is an ideal way for healthy individuals to maintain good health and general well being.

AYURVEDA is prevention-oriented and it is free from harmful side-effects as the treament consists of herbs, diet and lifestyle changes along with Yoga and Breathing exercises.

It treats the root cause of the disease rather than just its symptoms. Ayurveda views illness as a cause due to an imbalance in a person's physical or mental constitution (Vikruti) and therefore seeks to gently bring a person's body and mind back into a healthy balance.

With a few small changes to a person's daily life, it is possible to live the Ayurvedic way and reap the benefits.

Ayurvedic texts emphasise that health is found through consistent awareness and monitoring of our intake of Prana (life-energy), through our five senses, our food, our breath, our word and thought and action. It can effectively help cure many chronic ailments but its main goal is prevention.

Ayurveda is certainly not intended to replace Allopathy medicine, but rather to give people the tools to treat their body according to its needs, leading to emotional and mental well being and good health.
Ayurveda and Yoga are complementary to each other; some Ayurvedic remedies consist of special Yoga exercises.

Main health problems and areas that can be helped with an Ayurvedic approach are:
  • Digestive problems e.g. constipation, bloating, indigestion, gas, IBS, acidity
  • Sinus problems, allergies, hay fever
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Insomnia, low energy, fatigue
  • Menstrual problems, pain, irregularities, menopausal symptoms
  • Muscle and joint pain or stiffness, arthritis, back pain, neck pain
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Skin conditions e.g. acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin
  • Addictions e.g. sugar, coffee, smoking
  • Stress, tension, anxiety, worry, irritability, overactive or over stimulated mind
  • Depression, low self-esteem, general under-the-weather feeling
A Person is seen in Ayurveda as a unique individual made up of five primary elements.

These elements are Ether (space), Air, Fire, Water and Earth.

Just as in nature, we too have these five elements in us. When any of these elements are imbalanced in the environment, they will in turn have an influence on us. The foods we eat and the weather are just two examples of the influence of these elements.

The elements Ether and Air combine to form Vata Dosha.Vata governs the principle of movement and therefore can be seen as the force which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration and elimination etc.

The elements Fire and Water combine to form the Pitta Dosha.Pitta Dosha is responsible for the process of transformation or metabolism. The transformation of foods into nutrients that our bodies can assimilate is an example of a Pitta function. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism.

Finally, water and earth elements combine to form the Kapha Dosha. Kapha is responsible for growth, adding structure unit by unit. It also offers protection, for example, in the form of the cerebral-spinal fluid, which protects the brain and spinal column. The mucosal lining of the stomach is another example of the function of Kapha Dosha protecting the tissues.

We are all made up of unique proportions of Vata,Pitta and Kapha. These ratios of the Doshas vary in each individual and because of this Ayurveda sees each person as a special mixture that accounts for our diversity.

When any of the doshas become accumulated, Ayurveda will suggest specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to assist the individual in reducing the dosha that has become excessive.

Also herbal medicines will be suggested, to cure the imbalance and the disease.
  • According to Ayurveda, because we each have a unique constitution, our health prescription must be unique to us.
  • —This means that in order to be healthy, you need to eat certain foods that are beneficial for your body type and stay away from others.
  • —Your exercise program must be personally suitable as well. Your constitution determines very much about you - your body, your personality.
  • —Hence, in Ayurveda treatment, though two people are complaining of the same symptoms, the treatment given to both might differ depending on their basic constitution (Prakriti) and the aggravated dosha which is causing the imbalance (vikriti).
  • Similarly, the same herb can be given for various purposes. Its mode of action changes according to anupana, time of medicine, dosage of medicine.
Understanding this main principle of Ayurveda offers us an explanation as to why one person responds differently to a treatment or diet than another and why persons with the same disease might yet require different treatments and medications.

When the three Doshas are well harmonised and function in a balanced manner, it results in good nourishment and well-being of the individual. But, when there is imbalance or disharmony within or between them, it will result in imbalance, leading to various kinds of ailments.

The Ayurvedic concept of physical health revolves round these three Doshas and its primary purpose is to help maintain them in a balanced state and thus to prevent disease.

Your first appointment will begin with an assessment of your general health, medical history and family history, diet and lifestyle, questions about your sleep patterns, digestion and emotional state.

A physical examination will take place where I'll examine your pulse and tongue.

From this assessment I will be able to determine the state of the doshas within your body and recommend a course of treatments which includes suggesting a suitable diet and exercise routine based on it, along with the Herbal medicines and therapies, if required.

I Specialize in:
Pulse Diagnosis
  • Pulse diagnosis is an ancient Ayurvedic technique. It can diagnose both physical and mental diseases as well as imbalances.
  • It is an effective, inexpensive and non-invasive method of diagnosis. It is comprehensive and reaches the root cause of health issues, not merely addressing the symptoms. —
  • It forewarns you of potential health risks and gives an insight on how to optimise your health in accordance with the elements which are predominant in the body. —
  • It provides with a personalised and individual prognosis which is detailed.—
  • This knowledge comes directly from teacher to student. It requires a lot of practice and experience.
Marma Therapy
  • An old technique of healing in which a simple touch or light massage on the vital points of the body, the Marma points, are used to balance the life force (prana).
  • There are 107 main energy points on the surface of the body called Marma. Any blocked energy points causes disturbances in body, mind and emotions. By gently pressing or massaging these sites prana is stimulated, clearing stress and blocks in the body.
Cranio Sacral Therapy
  • A craniosacral therapy session involves placing hands on the patient, which allows to tune into the craniosacral rhythm.
  • By gently working with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms and fascia the restrictions of nerve passages are eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord is optimized, and misaligned bones are restored to their proper position.
  • Craniosacral therapy is used to treat mental stress, neck and back pain, migraines, for chronic pain conditions. Patients feel a sense of deep relaxation during and after the treatment session.
Nasya Therapy
  • One of the Panchakarmas mentioned in Ayurveda. Nasya therapy is a process wherein the drug (herbal oil) is administered through the nostrils.
  • Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head.
  • The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation, which has a direct influence on the functioning of brain.
  • The therapy keeps the eyes, nose and ear healthy.
  • It also prevents the early graying of hair. Helps in treating migraines, skin disorders.
Netra Tarpan
  • It is a special treatment for the eyes.
  • Freshly made dough rings are placed around the eyes, sterilized cow’s ghee (a clear butter-like liquid) is gently poured onto the eyes while they are kept open.
  • It is very effective in treating eye diseases and poor or blurred vision. It relieves tiredness and also improves eyesight.
  • It is highly recommended for people who regularly work at computers, drive for long periods or anyone who is currently suffering from tired, aching eyes.
Shirodhara
  • Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda medicine that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead. It was developed by vaidyas (practitioners of Ayurveda) in Kerala, India for use in sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiras 'head' and dhara 'flow'.
  • The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.
  • Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, graying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis.
  • It is also used for its relaxing properties.
