About Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a harmonising and restorative therapy developed in Japan and has origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Shiatsu brings fluidity into the body through stimulation of blood & Qi circulation. Qi is energy and can be understood as the life force supporting and enabling existence, impacting our sense of wellbeing in both mind and body.

Often through stress, illness, injury, diet or lifestyle habits and choices, circulation of Qi & blood becomes impeded or compromised perpetuating disease and creating pain & discomfort. The benefits of treatment are in the reduction or elimination of restrictions and the nourishment and mobilisation of Qi and blood to facilitate vitality and healing.

Oriental medicine views health as being dependent on all parts of the body functioning together and living a balanced lifestyle. A disorder in one part of the body has effects throughout the entire structure. Because of this a Shiatsu practitioner treats the whole body.

Shiatsu Treatment

Shiatsu is most commonly performed on a cushioned futon on the floor. The application of Shiatsu is through applied pressure to certain energy pathways (meridians) and points using palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, forearms, knees and feet. Shiatsu incorporates specific meridian stretches to open the body and employs the following oriental therapies:
  • Moxibustion - This is a form of heat therapy, utilising the refined and dried herb known as Mugwort. Moxa improves micro circulation and aids in reducing pain. It can be experienced as very soothing & has a fortifying effect on the immune system.

  • Cupping - This is the application of silicon cups to produce a negative suction. The suction draws and stretches the muscular and connective tissues removing adhesions, helping to alleviate pain.

  • Gua Sha Massage -  Through the use of a Gua Sha tool, often a porcelain spoon, a repetitive scrapping action applied over the skin stretches the connective tissue around tense and tight muscles.
