Swedish or Relaxation Massage

Swedish massage therapy is very gentle and relaxing. It consists of long smooth strokes, light kneading and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil. It is mostly used for relaxation, relief of stress and anxiety and to improve sleep and poor circulation.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue (fascia) and deeper and firmer pressure is used than with a Swedish massage. Slower strokes or friction techniques are used across the grain of the muscle using oil which ensures that muscles associated with a disorder are deeply penetrated.

Passive stretches are used where necessary. Key benefits of Remedial Massage include: stimulation of the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; toning and relaxing of knotted and tense muscles to improve joint mobility and speeding up of the body’s own repair mechanisms.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles and is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres.

Using deep muscle compression and friction along the grain of the muscle, the purpose of Deep Tissue Massage is to unstick the fibres of the muscles and release both toxins and deeply held tension points and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.

It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain. Because it works very deeply, emotional issues can also be addressed, when these have been stored in the body.

Deep Tissue Massage usually focuses on specific areas and may cause some soreness during or after the session. If the massage is done correctly however, you should feel better within a day or two. Water helps to eliminate toxins from the body so it is important to drink plenty of water after a Deep Tissue Massage to help this process along.

When receiving deep tissue work it is important to communicate what you are feeling and to provide feedback on the level of pressure used.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is specifically designed for people who are involved in lots of physical activity. The focus isn't on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury by helping overworked muscles to recover quickly and enhancing athletic performance.

Several techniques are used - the strokes are generally faster and more vigorous than Swedish massage and facilitated stretching of specific muscle groups is common as it helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.

A good Sports Massage will alleviate the stress and tension that builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Special attention can be paid to specific muscle groups used in a particular sport.

Pregnancy Massage

Massage therapists who are trained in pregnancy massage know the proper way to position and support the woman's body during the massage, and how to modify techniques. Pregnancy massage is used to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression. The massage is customised to a woman's individual needs.
