Welcome to Shepparton Myotherapy

‘Myo/Mys’ is a Latin word for muscle so therefore Myotherapy is ‘muscle therapy’ which is predominately the treatment of muscle/s that for a variety of reasons have become dysfunctional in some way. When muscles and soft tissue such as tendons and ligaments are not functioning correctly, they have the potential to cause pain and restriction.

Myotherapy is a method to relieve pain based on the application of pressure at trigger points commonly known as knots throughout the body. These trigger points are hypersensitive locations within the muscle which cause pain in the response to undue stress. This can be caused by injury, disease, physical or emotional stress to the muscle. Myotherapy is a very hands on approach when trying to affect a muscle change.

When see a Myotherapist?

Common problems that respond to Myotherapy include; Sports injuries acute and chronic, lower and middle back pain, neck pain and restriction, headaches and migraines, sciatica, arthritic pain, tennis and golfers elbow, pre and post pregnancy muscular pain, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle pain just to name a few. Whilst a sore muscle can often cause pain after it has been overworked, it does not always cause a long term problem especially if it is stretched and/or rested correctly. However if the muscle or soft tissue is affected and pain and restriction is still present after a few days, weeks, months or often YEARS! then it is advisable to consult a Myotherapist. We are also aware that Myotherapy is not effective for everyone and regularly refer to Naturopaths, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Chinese medicine practitioners, sports medicine doctors and many other therapists depending on your problem.

Why do I have pain?

When a muscle is causing pain this is due to the development of a trigger point (known commonly as a knot in the muscle) these trigger points are hypersensitive locations within the muscle which cause pain in the response to undue stress. This can be caused by injury, disease, physical or emotional stress to the muscle. When untreated these trigger points can cause the muscles to pull on the surrounding bones and cause pain and joint restriction, which can then lead to further bio-mechanical dysfunction down the track if left untreated.

What to expect post treatment

Myotherapy is very hands on with physical muscle manipulation and modalities, therefore it can be expected that you will feel a little sore post treatment. It is to be expected that you may have tenderness for up to 3 days this is allowing the body to adapt to the changes that the Myotherapist has placed upon the muscles of the body. However everyone is not the same and can react differently this is just a guide to how you may feel post treatment. So we ask that you call the clinic if any problems may arise and that you are unsure of and speak to the myotherapist directly.

Pricing

The duration of the Myotherapy treatment is 45 minutes at a cost of $75.00 which is claimable through many private health funds.

Private health insurance rebates

Most private heath insurance companies cover Myotherapy. Fortunately now you can claim through the HICAPS System. Some companies however such as HBA and HCF are not able to be processed. We ask that you pay for your treatment upfront and obtain a tax invoice from reception. This tax invoice will have the therapists appropriate provider number for you to claim your rebate from your nearest health fund office.

Workcover

Myotherapy is covered by Workcover provided you have a letter of referral from you doctor. Your initial consultation cost is paid by workcover so that you are able to ascertain the benefits of Myotherapy. When requiring further treatment we ask that you pay for your treatment upfront where you will obtain a tax invoice with the therapists appropriate workcover number. This will then enable you to send away the receipt to workcover and receive your rebate for the myotherapy session.
