Three-time winner of the Hepburn Regional Tourism Award, multiple Finalist and Merit Awardee (Runner Up) in the Victorian Tourism Awards, Australia's renowned Japanese guesthouse is an indulgent retreat featuring traditional accommodation, delicious cuisine, luxurious spa treats as well as holistic wellness and health treatments. Set amid tranquil bushland in central Victoria's picturesque "spa country", Shizuka Ryokan is fully authentic in every detail including its architecture, furnishings and gardens. More important however is the genuine and warm hospitality of the Japanese and local hosts, offering generous and personalised service including the signature four-course dinner which may be served individually to guestrooms. Whilst highly traditional, Shizuka Ryokan also caters for common creature comforts which are provided in a truly stylish environment. Couples, singles and small groups come to the inn to relax, indulge, rejuvenate and immerse in the romance and tranquillity. Shizuka Ryokan is also a unique venue for small community and corporate groups to conduct retreats, workshops and meetings. Located in Hepburn Springs near Daylesford, it's a small piece of Japan that's close to home - just a 75 minute drive from Melbourne. For Aussies, that's much more accessible than the long flight to Kyoto.

About Us
Shizuka Ryokan is well known and respected throughout Australia and also internationally. It has been featured in virtually all major travel lifestyle magazines and television programmes in Australia. It has also been profiled on Japanese television on a number of occasions and was named in the English edition of “Marie Claire” magazine as one of Australia’s top three spas.

Set amid four acres of bushland, the ryokan offers just six guest rooms, thus ensuring intimacy, privacy and tranquillity. The grounds are often visited by a wide variety of native Australian wildlife including kangaroos, ant-eaters, turtles and various colourful birds.

The guestrooms all feature the hallmarks of traditional Japanese style accommodation including futon bedding, shoji rice paper sliding screens and decorative tokonoma alcoves. They also boast modern world comforts including air conditioning, central hydronic heating, mini-bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, toiletries and CD player.

Guestrooms all feature tatami straw matting, offering that subtle fragrance unmistakenly reminiscent of Japan. Also featured are the zaisu chairs and hand-made zabuton pillows to accompany the traditional kotatsu low tables in each room.

The ensuite bathrooms in each guest suite have been totally renovated and now boast beautiful new tiling and accessories. And the dining room has introduced a range of beautiful original ceramics which were purchased in Japan exclusively for use at Shizuka Ryokan.

At Shizuka Ryokan, the emphasis is very much on relaxation. To that end, we consider it a virtue that we do not have television or telephones in our guest rooms. Whilst very popular with couples, singles and small groups, the ryokan is unfortunately not an appropriate venue for babies and children under the age of 16.

We are renowned for not only the hospitality of our Japanese staff but also for our authentic cuisine. As well as a four-course Japanese dinner, our menus also feature the traditional Japanese breakfast so rarely offered in Australia. We also offer western style breakfasts should you prefer.

So that you may thoroughly enjoy your dining experience, please notify us before you arrive should you have any special dietary requirements.

Our package prices include accommodation in a traditional Japanese style guestroom complete with a double-sized spa in the ensuite and a private Japanese garden, your choice of a traditional Japanese or full western breakfast daily, a four course Japanese dinner on one night and a leisurely 11am checkout. For your convenience, our check-in time is from 2pm daily.

Because the choice of in-house spa and massage treatments is so wide and the selection decision so highly personal, we offer our various spa services to augment your accommodation booking if and as you may desire. These spa services are listed in detail within the "indulgences" menu on this comprehensive website.

We do strongly recommend that you call to reserve these spa treatments as early as possible and certainly well before you arrive, as appointments can book out during busy periods, school and public holidays and also on weekends. Treatment appointment times are exclusively reserved for house guests to make their bookings during the period up to seven days prior to the appointment date. After that time however in the final week, bookings are opened to the general public, so please consider your spa options early to avoid disappointment.

Please note that we do have a cancellation policy and accordingly any accommodation bookings cancelled or changed will incur a fee if advised ten days or less from the date of your originally scheduled stay. The same fee also applies for spa therapies cancelled or changed within 72 hours of the original appointment time. Dinner cancellations require 24 hours notice. These charges also apply to no-shows and early departures.

A visit to Shizuka Ryokan is frequently enjoyed by couples celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Additionally, our Gift Vouchers are often purchased for that unique and personal gift of indulgence. Vouchers may be easily ordered online or by telephone and are valid for any Shizuka Ryokan accommodation, cuisine or spa service for a period of six months from the date of purchase.

We look forward to welcoming you to Shizuka Ryokan, Australia’s only fully authentic Japanese style retreat. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like to confirm a booking.
