What is Pilates?
Pilates is a physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It became a system of exercises that are based on aerobics and yoga postures of Surya Namaskaras.
The program concentrates on the core postural muscles which assist in keeping the body balanced and which are integral to providing support for the spine. Specifically, Pilates movements and exercises teach awareness of the alignment of the spine and breath, and seeks to develop strength in the deep torso muscles.
Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health are essential to one another. It is recommended that a few specific movements that emphasise control and form help individuals in re-establishing optimal health by stretching, strengthening and stabilising key muscles. The Pilates Principles to condition the entire body are; proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing and flowing movements.
What is the difference between Pilates and Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates has been formulated around Josephs original teachings, however it incorporates this with the advanced training and university qualified mind of a Osteopath, Physiotherapist or Chiropractor.
Your average ‘Pilates class’ at the gym or Pilates sessions without the knowledge and experience of a clinical Pilates instructor, and many of the exercises you are doing are not tailored correctly for your personal needs or how your spine and core muscles activate. Clinical Pilates is able to give you the results that you have been searching for.
