What are Primitive and Postural Reflexes?

Primitive or Baby Reflexes are movements which occur as an automatic response to specific stimuli.

Primitive Reflexes assist with the movement in the womb and the birth process. They are also needed for the baby's protection and development in the early months of life.

These reflexes should integrate (or disappear) in the first 12 months of life allowing for Postural Reflexes to emerge.

Postural Reflexes emerge to assist us with balance and coordination needed

for fine and gross motor activities.

Some children retain some or all of their primitive reflexes,

which hampers the development of their postural reflexes.
