About Us

Anisa Poonja is the founder of Sprout Yoga, Australia. Anisa is a caring, loving, energetic yet earthy individual who loves connecting with people and whose life and passion is yoga.

Sprout Yoga focuses on yoga for beginners, laying down the physical and philosophical foundations of yoga.

Yogini Anisa is of Serbian, Indian and Italian heritage and has lived in many places around the world including Africa, Portugal, Canada and Australia. Her diverse background has allowed her to accumulate and assimilate various different aspects from many cultures. She has finally settled on the Gold Coast and after living in Australia for twelve years she considers this country to be her home. Anisa loves travelling overseas and has fallen in love with India, which has become her second home. She often refers to Mother India as her ‘beating heart’ especially since this is the place where she deepened her spirituality and yoga practice.

Anisa first explored her interest in health by enrolling in tertiary nursing studies, however after two years of study and practical experience she found that as much as she loved learning about the body, she didn’t want the lifestyle that came along with working as a nurse. She instead pursued a Bachelor of Public Health majoring in Nutrition and, after successfully completing the degree in early 2011, is now an Accredited Nutritionist. The transition from nursing to nutrition came naturally to Anisa, thanks largely to her mother’s lifelong positive influence and education on the importance of proper nutrition and spirituality.

Anisa realised her love for India while conducting qualitative research in rural Bangalore, India as part of her public health degree. Her study evaluated the effectiveness of local NGO interventions to reduce malnutrition in young children in a cluster of rural villages. She is now in the final stage of publishing her paper with her supervisor Dr. Fiona Rowe.

While this trip to India formed an important part of her public health degree, it also sparked a love for India and its culture. Anisa has since returned to India, and these trips have allowed her to gain knowledge on various subjects such as ayurveda (Indian traditional medicine), yoga philosophy and Buddhism. She has roamed in Kolkata, Goa, Mumbai, Bangalore and, her favourite place in the world, the Himalayas. Within the Himalaya region she is particularly enamoured with McLeod Ganj, which is home of the Dalai Lama in India.

In addition to travelling and exploring her spirituality, Anisa completed the 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Course in the Himalayas at Vijay’s Universal Yoga (recognized by Yoga Alliance). Vijay himself is an elderly, skinny and deceptively strong South Indian man with a captivating smile. He took Anisa under his wing as she completed her teacher training and challenged her views and beliefs, allowing her to break down misconceptions surrounding yoga and gain a better understanding of how to engage in a supportive practice that respects and honours the body.

Since returning to Australia Anisa has had a burning desire to share her newly acquired knowledge with others by conducting seminars and teaching Hatha Yoga on the Gold Coast. Anisa also continues to grow in her personal yoga practice, which is Ashtanga, under her principle Yoga Teacher Mark, a Buddhist Zen Monk and Ashtanga Yoga Master.

The practice of yoga has become an integral part of Anisa’s life both on and off the mat. The focus of her business, Sprout Yoga, is to teach beginner level yoga in a supportive environment with the intention of helping others experience for themselves all the wonderful things yoga has to offer for the mind, body and soul.

Sprout Yoga caters for absolute beginners to those in the early stages of their practice. Anisa offers a supportive, non-intimidating and encouraging space to practice. The classes are offered in different locations, including Five Rings Dojo in Mermaid Beach, Currumbin Valley Ecovillage, Woodhenge in Tugun and Source Wellness in Burleigh. Sprout Yoga can also come to your business offering corporate yoga before or after work or even during your lunch hour! Small private group sessions (of up to 4 people) are also available for those wanting to train with their friends.
