What is Iridology?
Fundamental to iridology is the concept that the iris is a reliable representation of a persons well-being. It is natures own infallible way of recording tissue change or states of ill-health in the body. It reveals areas of inflammation and with an iris map we learn what areas of the body are affected. Iridology gives us information concerning your health and is an important element of a total health care program.

Eyes are the window to the soul. This modality is a safe and painless way to reveal the condition of every organ in the body. Through various signs and discolourations nature shows us your inherited structure and constitutional health as well as strengths and weakness in certain areas. These areas of weakness are confirmed through other testing procedures and we then come up with a protocol to work on them.

How did Iridology start?
Iridology dates back hundreds of years, but the first iris map developed was in the early 1800's by a doctor named Ignatz von Pezcely in Hungary. He is known as the father of iridology. In his childhood it is written that he captured an injured owl in his backyard that had a broken leg. He noticed in one of its eyes that there was a black line but when the leg healed, a white mark appeared where the dark mark was. This incident started a life-long interest and study of iridology. Since then, many scientists, doctors, and health professionals around the world have studied iridology. Iridology is taught in countries like America, Australia, Germany, and Russia, where even modern medicine has begun to take notice.

CONSTITUTIONAL TYPES of IRISES

SILK - This person has a very good constitutional strength; they rarely get sick but respond to treatment and recovers quickly. They can lack emotional understanding.

SILK/LINEN This person also has a good constitution but is slightly less robust than a silk. They need a good amount of exercise and can suffer from over exertion or overwork.

LINEN This is the more common iris type. They are the midpoint of the irises, their structure is more vulnerable and they have more health issues and they are more sensitive emotionally.

HESSIAN This person has an inherently weaker structure but a greater awareness, sensitivity and flexibility both physically and emotionally. They need to take more care to stay balanced.

NET This person can filter experiences as they need. They can be very intuitive giving attention to that which they believe they need to and leaving the rest, this helps them achieve balance.

MAJOR IRIS SIGNS and MARKINGS

PSORA These are birth marks on the iris. They may not be a problem depending on where they are or they can block information coming through correctly from that part of the body.

LESIONS These show areas that are under functioning in the iris and they can show inherited weaknesses too. The colour and shape of the lesion shows how long this has been a problem.

RADII SOLARIS These are elongated and darkened lines showing a toxic or slow moving bowel and depending on where they go as to what other areas of the body this toxicity will affect.

NERVE RINGS These are indicators of excessive nerve tension. They vary in intensity from acute white through to dark and chronic. Again where they are depends on what they affect.

SCURF RIM It is a darkened area on the periphery of the iris and represents an underactive, congested skin. Dry skin brushing and exercise may help as well as improving bowel function.

LYMPHATIC ROSARY These are cloud-like spots again on the periphery and shows disturbances in the lymphatic system. Lymphatic circulation is improved with exercise.

SODIUM RING A solid white ring around the iris it indicates a chemical imbalance, this can be salt, calcium and also cholesterol.

ARCUS SENILIS This looks likes a sodium ring across the top of the iris, it shows poor circulation and oxygenation to the brain.

AUTONOMIC NERVE WREATH It is around the pupil and shows the natural tension between the 2 arms of the nervous system. It can be too faint, too tight all around or just in certain areas showing where the tension is manifesting.

COMMON PROBLEMS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The large bowel circles the pupil and if slow moving, under functioning and toxic it can affect various organs. Organ tissues are as healthy as the blood that supplies them and the blood is only as clean as the bowel from which nutrients are supplied. Fibre will aid movement, as will exercise and correct amount of fluids.

The liver is an important part of the digestion and also detoxification system. To support an under functioning liver look for bitter or sour tasting foods, try hot water with lemon first thing in the morning, green tea, dandelion and fennel tea. Other foods like beetroot, brussel sprouts, garlic and globe artichoke can also help.

Gall bladder is involved with fat metabolism and can be also be supported with the liver foods as well as olive oil, cabbage, carrots, globe artichokes, onions and lecithin - try a tablespoon on cereal or in a shake.

The pancreas makes insulin and controls blood sugar levels with it through digestion of carbohydrates and sugar. The best way to stabilize blood sugar is by limiting the amount of insulin that is made by limiting carbohydrate / sugar consumption and consuming protein the size and thickness of your palm with each meal.

The adrenal glands produce our fight or flight hormones. To support them try liquorice tea, parsley, sage and sunflower seeds also try getting enough sleep, cutting down on caffeine, sugar and stress when possible.

The nervous system is linked to the adrenal glands and vice versa. To support the nervous system yoga, meditation and breath work at any time are wonderful. Herbal teas such as chamomile, valerian, passion flower and hops work well. Try lavender oil in a burner or handkerchief. B vitamins, calcium and magnesium are important nutrients that may need to be supplemented as well as fish oils.

The respiratory system involves many organs. To support lungs, bronchioles and sinus try zinc, vitamin C, garlic, and the herbs Echinacea, Olive Leaf and Andrographis. Any yellow, red or orange vegetables, inhaling tea tree and eucalyptus oil. Rest, moderate exercise and lowering stress can be preventative.

Reproduction organs, both female and male show in the iris. Hormonal imbalance can be corrected with foods that aid oestrogen clearance such as wheat bran, rosemary, watercress, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. The herb Vitex (chaste berry) may also be useful to stabilise hormones.

The back, neck, jaw and limbs often show in the iris as they can be under a lot of strain and tension. If tight and sore consider a massage, physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment to correct the tension also the mineral Magnesium can be beneficial.
