ABOUT

The Active Body Project

I’ve been involved in sports and training from an early age. Firstly, with Soccer and Basketball as a kid, then Boxing and Rock climbing as an adult. I’ve also had a keen interest in Resistance training for more than 15 years, moving through traditional Barbell training to Kettlebells and, more recently, bodyweight resistance.

I started to climb 10 years ago, but until the last few years haven’t considered my training and climbing to be synchronised, rather I climbed for fun and trained for full body strength and fitness. Most of my time climbing has been spent Trad climbing when the weather has been fine and indoor roped climbing when the weather has been bad. In the last couple of years I’ve also started to explore bouldering and sport climbing too.

Having been involved in physical sports and activities for most of my life, I’ve had several injuries that have kept me from training and have lead me to explore how I can prevent common injuries from occurring, and recover as quickly as possible when they do, so that I can stay active as much as possible year to year.

One climbing related injury that I have suffered in the past is Golfers Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis). I know this type of tendon pain irritates lots of other climbers too so I looked into how best to treat so I could quickly get to back to climbing. I was happy to find my treatment plan got the condition under control quite quickly and have since found the same treatment to help many of my other climbing friends.

I’ve also suffered from various knee overuse injuries in the past too, which also led me to explore how I can strengthen my knees with Pre-hab type exercises so that I can train harder and longer. With knees being another common cause for concern amongst people moving into their 30’s and onwards, it has been great to apply the same techniques to friends and fellow climbers also.

These injuries, various other acute injuries and a keen interest in strength and conditioning motivated me to start my Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology. I’ve since been able to apply the things I’ve learnt in the way I train people to become stronger and more resilient and it feels good to be able to do this in ways that are backed by science, rather than social media, which I take great pride and pleasure in doing.

My main goals for setting up the Active Body Project are to help people build resilient and strong bodies so that they can enjoy doing the things they love, without pain, long into the future. My passion is in helping people to get back into the activities they love in a safe and effective way so that they have no regrets as they move into later life and are able to continue to do the things they love.
