What psychotherapy is like
Most people have an idea in their mind of what counselling or psychotherapy is, and they usually get this idea from what they’ve seen on television or on the movies (from now on I’ll use the general term ‘psychotherapy’ to cover both psychotherapy, counselling and other related terms). Often they imagine lying on a couch whilst a bearded Austrian man sits behind them taking notes!

Getting comfortable
Whilst this sort of treatment is still practiced – and it’s generally known as psychoanalysis – it’s a lot different to the counselling or psychotherapeutic experience that most people have.
Although there are many variations, the most common situation for psychotherapy is a room where two people sit on comfortable chairs more or less facing each other. The more comfortable it is for the client, the better it is. This is the sort of psychotherapy I practice.
We are both trying to pool our resources to work through the client's problem. It is this that marks the difference between contemporary psychotherapy and older forms of psychotherapy.

Taking the time to understand
If you see me, you can expect that I will take great pains to understand the difficulties that you are going through and what you are experiencing. To increase my understanding, I may ask questions from time to time; you can respond in any way you want.

What you can expect from me
I believe you have every right to expect a number of things from a psychotherapist.

Firstly, you can expect that what is said between you and I remains confidential. A professional psychotherapist will not disclosure anything that occurs in the course of their work with their friends or family, and will only disclose information with other colleagues with the express permission of the client. Even then, all psychotherapists have a very strong injunction against disclosing even the smallest detail that will allow their client to be identified.

Secondly, you can expect to be treated with respect. I strongly believe that a professional psychotherapist will not deliberately say things that will cause you to feel shame or guilt about the things you have thought or felt or done. On the contrary, a lot of the work of psychotherapists is to help their clients lift the heavy burden of guilt or shame from the past, not to add to it.

Thirdly, you can expect that a psychotherapist will work hard to understand you and your life. It is only through taking the time to listen and understand, to appreciate what you are going through and what you are feeling that a psychotherapist earns the privilege of being able to help you. Because you pay for psychotherapeutic sessions it is your time.

Fourthly, I believe that when a psychotherapist takes on clients they take on a commitment to that client that extends beyond the actual face-to-face sessions. The psychotherapist makes themselves available for their client for the agreed sessions, but they also understand that their client will, from time to time, come to mind between sessions. This is a normal part of the day for a psychotherapist and is not an intrusion; it is part of the work.

Lastly, it is important to understand that the client is in control of what happens in the sessions; I will not rail-road clients into exploring things that they are unwilling to look at. I am sure that to do this creates a situation where the client begins to feel unsafe with the psychotherapist, and this leads to a reduction in the good work that we can do; much better progress can be made we focus on what the client wants and needs to talk about.

No cost, no obligation initial interview
Because you need to feel comfortable with me, I offer a no-cost initial consultation. This is an opportunity for you to make sure that you feel that you’d like to work with me, and for me to let you know if I think I can help, and in what ways. If we both agree, then a series of sessions will follow.

My fees
My standard fee for a fifty minute session is $95, but I understand that for some people this is beyond their means. If you think this might apply to you, we can talk about a concessional rate that would work for both of us at our initial interview.
