Pilates is a body conditioning session that was developed in the early 20th Century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates work involves exercise both using and without using Pilates exercise equipment. Joseph Pilates believes that our body could be transformed into a perfect “powerhouse” resulting in increased balance, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and spinal/pelvic alignment. Consistent Pilates practice will stimulate improved awareness of personal movement patterns, improved breathing techniques and mental focus. It helps in the lengthening and the sculpting of muscles as opposed to putting on heavy bulky muscle. These exercises can be modified according to your individual fitness levels and range from beginner to advanced, even going so far as helping with rehabilitation from injuries and for the improvement of professional athletic training. Intensity can be increased once your body is ready to adapt to more challenging positions and the range of exercises possible across all of the Pilates mat classes and specialised equipment is vast.
