Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years, with a history as rich and ancient as sorcery, magic, and medicine; but its scientific history began in the latter part of the 18th century with Franz Mesmer, a German physician. In 1774.
The foundation and understanding for how hypnosis works are based in neuroscience and the new science of redefining the limits of what is possible.
Therapeutic hypnosis usually and mostly employs verbal suggestion, relaxation, and guided visual imagery and it is not the entertainment style of hypnosis which is designed to use shock and confusion techniques to achieve the instant hypnotic state of deep theta, classically termed a Rapid Induction.Intentionally inducing a cathartic reaction during hypnosis has not been shown to have any more immediate or long-term benefits for the subject than the use of direct suggestion and/or metaphor.
What is Hypnotherapy?
During hypnotherapy, a hypnotic relaxed state can make a person better able to respond to subconscious suggestions, bypassing the conscious mind, therefore positively making changes to behaviour and thoughts.
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state where a person may be able to focus their attention on an issue or concern. Hypnosis occurs naturally when a person has become totally aborbed in what they may be doing. They may be day-dreaming where a person will naturally go into an alpha state. With the help of a trained health professional, hypnotherapy can help a person to notice an improvement over their unwanted negative thoughts or behaviours.
Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. You are still conscious when you are under hypnosis and you are fulling in control. You do not lose control over your mind or your feelings. You do not weaken or surrender your will to any other person. In fact, your will-power may be strengthened with hypnosis.
In hypnosis, it is usual to feel relaxed, at ease, and you may well enjoy a special peace of mind. Many people comment on their feeling of comfort and security, or the sensation of lightness or floating. What is particularly pleasant about hypnosis is the fact that it is natural and safe.
Can Hypnotherapy Help Me?
Hypnotherapy will allow you to explore thoughts, feelings, and memories that might have been hidden from conscious thoughts. Hypnosis is usually considered an aid to psychotherapy and counselling. Ultimately, hypnosis can enable people to perceive some things differently.
