Dr Leonie Aitken
M.B., B.S., MRCGP
Medical practitioner and Homoeopath

Leonie is a family general practitioner, and has been treating children for many years. She administers the standard vaccinations, but for childhood illness will advise you on the most appropriate choice for the situation, be it drugs, homoeopathy, general health approaches, or referral where indicated.

Dr Michael Cleary
M.B., B.S., M.F.Hom.
Medical practitioner and Homoeopath

I am a homoeopath with 25 years experience in treating children.

There are two main ways of treating children’s illness.

Firstly what I would call acute conditions such as sore throats, ear infections, teething, vomiting, diarrhea, etc - conditions of less than 1 weeks duration. These are treated with the remedy that matches the symptom picture.

Secondly, the more chronic or longer term conditions such as asthma, eczema, glue-ear, tendency to colds, tonsillitis and digestive problems. These are treated with a constitutional remedy. The choice of this remedy is based more upon the individuality of the patient, and therefore requires a more in-depth knowledge of the patient.

Megan Collins
B.Ost. (British School of Osteopathy)
Osteopath

Many problems that babies or children experience can be related back to the pregnancy, extreme stress of birth (especially if there were complications), injury or illness. The stresses and strains may not resolve naturally and could cause discomfort, irritability, colic, vomiting, sleep disturbance or problems with feeding or bowel motions.

Osteopathic treatment is recommended from a few weeks after birth, and highly beneficial to resolve any remaining stresses or strains that will get progressively harder to treat with time.

Megan studied in the UK, gaining profound experiences working with respected osteopaths and treating in a specialist children’s clinic. Using a subtle, gentle and very effective approach, Megan treats the underlying cause of the problem with a focus on restoring normal movement, muscle tone, blood flow, venous/lymph drainage and nerve action. The result is usually a happy, healthy and relaxed child.

Deborah Cooper
ND., Dip. Herb. Med., DRM
Naturopath

Deborah Cooper is a naturopath with 25 years experience. If you are wondering if a change in your child's diet might improve their health and behaviour then she is the person to work with you. Drawing on her own experience as a parent and also from many years working with families, her main focus when working with children is on simple dietary modification to ensure the child remains well nourished and to improve health outcomes. Deborah understands the difficulties many parents and carers face when trying to alter a child's diet and therefore gives practical self help ideas and solutions. She can also guide you regarding suspected food allergy or intolerances.

Deborah works on all aspects of children's health with children of all ages, including newborns and adolescents. Deborah is a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society and is a fully accredited practitioner of naturopathy, nutrition and herbal medicine.

Anthony Kelly
Dip. TCM, Cert. TCM (China), Cert. Manaka Acup., Registered Nurse
Japanese acupuncture

The treatment of children in Japanese Acupuncture is a specialized field. Shonishin, or “Children’s Needle” Therapy, was developed 250 years ago in the Osaka region of Japan. This system combined traditional Chinese non-insertion techniques with Japanese massage methods to produce a method that is gentle and effective.

A child’s physiology is different to an adult’s and up until the age of 5, no needles are inserted. After the age of 5 gentle insertion may be practiced but with discernment and only when trust with the child has been established.

The approach when treating children is as follows:

First the child’s system is regulated through the use of a “General Whole Body Technique”. This is achieved by using light rhythmic pressing, tapping and rubbing along particular meridians of the body with specialized tools made from gold, silver, copper and steel.

Next, parents of the children are taught to do the “General Whole Body Treatment” in the clinic under my supervision. When they have a command over this technique and have a satisfactory understanding of the treatment principles, they are encouraged to treat their children at home. This basic and safe technique is proven to have a powerful effect on the well-being and health of the child.

Additionally, in the clinic, I do the more specialized treatments which target the child’s particular symptoms and review the parent’s home treatments.

Children’s bodies are very responsive to treatment and it is common for the child to have a slight rise in body temperature after treatment or perhaps have a loose bowel motion.

Children’s acupuncture can be effective in treating the following symptoms:
  • Irritability, hyperactivity, tantrums and insomnia usually seen in children between the ages of 3 months to 5 years.
  • Night terrors – often seen in children aged from 2 years until commencement of school.
  • Gastrointestinal problems/dyspepsia – upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation or poor appetite. This often concerns psycho-emotional factors rather than gastrointestinal viral and bacterial infections.
  • Respiratory and ear, nose and throat problems – bronchial asthma, chronic nasal congestion or a running nose, often related to allergies and diet.
  • Tonsillitis and ear infections.
  • Bedwetting.
  • Eczema
  • Low immunity with tendencies to catch colds.
  • Stuttering and stammering.

Tanya Majzoub
M.TCM, Cert. TCM (China)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Chinese herbs)

Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for over 2000 years, and is currently used by millions of people all over the world. Pediatrics is regarded as a specialty area of Chinese medicine and children are not simply treated as miniature adults. It recognizes that children’s systems are immature, still developing and changing as they grow. Care is taken to support and nurture this development. This is an important factor in both diagnosing and treating children with Chinese medicine.

Tanya has been practicing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine since 1994. Her philosophy is to gently restore the body to balance so that it is able to grow, strengthen, develop resilience and resistance to illness (pathogenic factors). She will use a combination of either or both acupuncture, Chinese herbs, dietary and lifestyle advice to treat children holistically and effectively.

Needles are generally not used for babies or infants. Instead a gentle but effective form of specialized paediatric massage is used to stimulate and balance the child’s energies and treat their symptoms. Acupuncture needles may be used on older children. Very fine, sterile needles are inserted and withdrawn one at a time and not retained for more than a few seconds. Children’s energy is very dynamic and responds to very little mild, gentle stimulation. Acupuncture is well tolerated by most children. Traditional Chinese herbs may be used in addition or by themselves, depending on the child, their problem and their preferences.

Traditional Chinese medicine is used to effectively treat many childhood disorders including recurrent colds and flu’s, ear infections, digestive problems, sleep disorders, bed-wetting and skin problems such as eczema, hives and dermatitis.
