What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial Massage is treatment oriented soft tissue therapy, which has evolved out of the sports medicine industry. It deals with the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal pathologies.

Soft tissues include muscles, fascia (connective tissue), ligaments and tendons, which are all prone to overuse, overloading, and abnormal shortening and lengthening, resulting in inflammation and pain.

Functional Assessment: Clients undergo a full orthopaedic functional assessment to pinpoint the cause of the pain. The tests used to assess musculoskeletal function are selected according to the symptoms the client presents with, and may include, posture, biomechanical, range of movement, and neural tests.

If the results of the functional assessment are consistent with a condition that is outside the scope of Remedial Massage Therapy, referral to a more appropriate healthcare professional will be offered (GP, sports physician, physiotherapist, podiatrist, etc).

Treatment Therapies

The treatment therapies used during Remedial Massage are based on the pain or injury that is to be treated and may include:

Myofascial Therapy for improving the flexibility/mobility of the myofascial unit: Fascia is a specialized connective tissue that wraps muscles, organs and other soft tissue. Effective muscle movement is dependent on the ability of these fascial wrappings to slide over each other. At times fascial wraps become stuck – “glued” to each other. MFT employs gentle oblique traction to “unglue” stuck fascia restoring full range of movement to the affected muscles and the joints that they move.

Trigger Point Therapy to alleviate trigger points: Trigger points are focal points of muscle pain that indicate areas of local congestion and muscle unit dysfunction. Muscles containing trigger points are generally sore and shortened - releasing trigger points allows the muscle to return to its normal resting length and function, relieving pain and restoring full range of movement to joints restricted by abnormal muscle function.

Frictions for the reduction of muscle adhesions: Frictions promote healing in muscle and tendon pathologies by decreasing pain perception, which in turn dampens down the inflammatory response allowing the body to repair and rebalance.

Acupressure to unblock meridians and promote energy flow: Acupressure is a combination of acupuncture and massage that uses the thumbs, fingertips, elbows or tools, rather than needles, to apply pressure massage to acupoints along the acupuncture meridians.

PNF Stretching to reduce joint restrictions and improve ROM: PNF uses light contractions against resistance in very specific directions to reduce joint restrictions and improve range of movement (ROM).

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) to stimulate the body’s lymphatic circulation: Our lymph system, as a major part of the immune system, is responsible for removing waste and defending the body against infection. MLD is a very gentle massage, focusing on lymph nodes and vessels, applied in the direction of lymph flow to relieve congestion and reduce fluid retention.

How Can Remedial Massage Help You?

Remedial Massage reduces pain perception. This allows your mind to rest as your focus shifts back to living your life, rather than being constantly distracted by pain and the worry of what might be causing it, and how on earth you are going to cope with the demands of home and work while you are in so much pain. As the mind relaxes the body relaxes, further reducing pain and giving the body space to heal.

Remedial Massage improves the range of motion of restricted joints. By releasing trigger points and "ungluing" stuck tissue, Remedial Massage allows muscles to return to their normal resting length and function, allowing you to move more easily as your joints "free-up", improving posture and flexibility and reducing the pain commonly associated with stiff joints.

Remedial Massage can improve mental health and the ability to cope. Chronic pain is emotionally and physically debilitating. As well as the reduction of pain through manual intervention, Caroline can offer you pain management strategies that are effective, simple, and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. These strategies may include Yoga exercises and stretches and a PNF regime designed to address your particular muscle imbalances, and, general nutrition and lifestyle strategies to reduce both mental and postural stress.

Consultations will be offered to you in an environment and manner that ensures your personal safety and comfort.

Consultations are completely confidential.

Important Information About Your Appointment

Treatment of the muscles involved in headaches, may, on occasion, cause rebound headaches. If you experience headaches as your primary, or one of your primary symptoms, it is preferable that you book a time that allows you to go home and rest after treatment.

It is important that you allow a minimum of 48 hours between manual therapy treatments to reduce the possibility of an adverse reaction as a result of over stimulation of the inflammatory response, which may result in an increase in pain and swelling, rather than the desired resolution of symptoms.

Initial Appointments: Taking your medical history and completing your functional assessment may take longer than anticipated if your history is complicated - please come prepared with dates of recent serious illness, injuries, and surgeries.

Client medical history and consent forms can be emailed to you for completion before you attend for your appointment. You will be offered this option at the time of booking your initial consultation.

Saturday appointments are very popular - should a client require a follow-up treatment they generally rebook at the end of their consultation. As a result you might be required to wait a week for an initial consultation appointment.

Appointments begin and end on time: if you are late for your appointment it will not be possible to extend your appointment past its end time - in most cases there will be a booking directly following yours.

It is your responsibility to be on time - you will be charged the full price of your consultation regardless of how late you are.

Cancellation Policy: If you are unable to attend an appointment please give the clinic 24hrs notice so that your appointment can be offered to someone else.

Life happens! You are welcome to change your appointment or cancel it and rebook at a later date. You can do this by email, text or telephone call - whichever you find easiest, and whichever ensures your ability to give 24hrs notice.

If you have an emergency, please call or text as soon as you are able to, as it may be possible to offer what is left of your appointment to someone requiring a shorter treatment - it's never too late to let the clinic know.

By Appointment Only: Please call Caroline on 0403 822 446 to book your Remedial Massage.
