Calcium Deficiency

Calcium deficiency usually occurs when there is an inadequate supply of calcium or when calcium cannot be metabolized correctly. Calcium is most well-known as being vital for bone and dental health but it also plays a role in blood coagulation, the transmission of nerve impulses, muscles contracting and relaxing and the regulation of the heartbeat. Blood calcium levels take priority in the body and if these are too low, the body will take calcium from the bones, causing disease such as osteoporosis. Treatment for calcium deficiency includes calcium supplementation, and nutritional therapy.
