An age old, now newly revived culinary staple, have become the basis of cooking, as well as an invigorating health drink. These foods not only add flavour to your dish, bone broth in particular, is bursting with amazing and magical nutrients!

So, What is Bone Broth?

Bone broth is basically just "dressed up" broth with added shimmer, deliciousness and nutrition. You can make it with any animal bones, including fish. These bones are simmered in water with vegetables for hours, breaking down the bones and exposing the nutrients.  At the end of the simmering period, the bones should crumble between your fingers.

Health Benefits of Bone Broth

Bone Broth and the Gut

Research has shown that your gut plays a significant role in your general health and wellbeing. Many processed foods and an imbalanced diet can greatly affect the healthy bacteria in your gut, causing an imbalance in the ratio in the mix of gut microorganisms. Bone broth is excellent for the health of your gut, especially the healing and sealing of it. Bone broth contains important and valuable nutrients.

Great for Colds

Chicken contains an amino acid called cysteine.  One of the functions of this amino acid is to thin the mucus in the blood, making it less sticky and therefore making it easier to cough up.

Strengthens the Immune System

A healthy immune system is very important because our body will be able to hunt down pathogenic cells out and destroy them before they get out of hand and make us sick. Bone broth contains certain substances that help in this process including amino acids arginine, glutamine and glycine. Bone marrow is especially beneficial to the immune system because it contains lipids, especially alkylglycerols that produces white blood cells.

Nutrients Found in Bone Broth

The bone itself contains important minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, potassium, sulphur as well as silicon. During the simmering process, these nutrients are extracted from the bone. The marrow will give you vitamins K2, A, omega 3, omega 6 as well as iron, zinc, selenium, boron and manganese. The connective tissue provides you with glucosamine and chondroitin which are important nutrients for arthritis as well as joint pain.

Bone Broth and Beauty

The abundant amount of collagen, minerals and vitamins found in bone broth has many positive benefits for your skin, hair and nails.

Bone Broth Recipe

This recipe is highly nutritious. It calls for bones from beef and pork. It is a much better option to use bones that come from an animal that has been reared organically and grass fed.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 kg beef marrow
  • 1 kg meaty bones such as short ribs
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 4 litres filtered water
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 onions
  • Handful of fresh parsley
  • Himalayan salt

Method

  1. Halve the celery stalks, carrots and onions.
  2. Place the bones in a large pot, add apple cider vinegar and water and let the mixture sit for an hour so that the vinegar can leach out the minerals from the bones. If needed, add more filtered water so that the bones are covered.
  3. At this stage, you can add the vegetables and bring to the boil.  Skim the scum off the top and discard.
  4. Reduce to a low simmer and cover. Cook for 24-72 hours. If you are using a slow cooker, you will need to still bring to the boil and then transfer to slow cooker. Cook on low for 24-72 hours.
  5. During the final 10 mins of cooking time, add the parsley.
  6. Cool and drain.  Add the salt for taste.
