Do I need a minimum of Certificate IV to start Massaging professionally in Australia?
No. You can start massaging professionally after our 18 hour hands-on whole body massage course. Once you join the International Institute for Complimentary Therapists (IICT) or the Massage Association of Australia (MAA), which enables you to buy your Professional Indemnity Insurance, you are legally allowed to massage. Feel free to contact the MAA on (03) 9555 9900.
What is the main difference between your DMA Whole Body Massage Course and other weekend courses?
Our course is nationally recognised by 2 professional industry bodies. The IICT and the MAA. As it is nationally recognised, once you join the association and have your insurance you are allowed to practice professionally.
Our course is a comprehensive, intense "hands-on" course that is designed so you will be able perform a full body massage by the end of the weekend. By this stage, we do ask you to put all that is learned into practice with completing a full body massage. We wouldn't do this unless we knew you will be able to. We are that confident and it has been proven over 20 years of running this course.
Other weekend courses charge less but are "part courses" and designed to "up sell" you into their certified courses. It's only a numbers game to them. This is the reason for the lower price. Most of the course is discussion about the massage industry with some hands-on massage. You will only learn part of the body i.e back, back of legs. No front of legs and no arms, face.
At DMA, we will teach how to massage the whole body with a sequence of strokes designed to relax and lengthen the muscles. We teach you how to put the massage together.
Our course is like no other weekend massage course. You will begin massaging within 15 minutes of the course starting. We dont make you listen to our instructors talk for hours before you begin, we discuss those important topics such as anatomy, scope of practice, ethics and laws of massage as we go.
Other weekend courses do not allow you to start working professionally on completion. They will tell you that you need a Certificate IV in massage to practice. (This is incorrect).
On signing up they will not inform you of this. (They are not being upfront with you as it's only a numbers game to them for up selling. This confuses the consumer which is very disappointing. They are not allowing you to make a decision on a course that best suits you.
We have had people attend our course after these other weekend courses very disappointed that they were not told this information up front. They were also disappointed they didn't learn how to massage the whole body and didn't know how to put a massage together.
The old saying, "you only pay for what you get" is very true, so please be careful when choosing a weekend course that's right for you. Sometimes paying less isn't a good option. When comparing weekend courses there is always a reason for the price differences.
Discover Massage Australia is the only reputable massage school who is prepared to put a Money Back Guarantee on it's course. Why? Because 20 years of history tells us you get value for money and you will come away knowing how to do a full body massage confidently and not just a few strokes.
Are there any mistruths in the massage industry?
Absolutely. You may have been told the minimum requirement to massage is Certificate IV.
This is incorrect. It is very disappointing the industry isn't truthful about this. The massage industry is deregulated. To massage legally in Australia please see below requirements:
- You need to have completed a course that is recognised by an association.
- You need to join the association that recognises the course. Every massage therapist needs to be a member of an association.
- Once you have joined the association you will be eligible for professional indemnity insurance.
- Once you have done the above you can start massaging.
Again, Certificate IV in massage is not the minimum requirement. Every school should inform you of this when you are researching for a course.
