IKON Institute of Australia - Youth Work
1.5 years, 1026 nominal hours
1 day per week of classroom training and 100 hours work/field placement.
This course has a blended delivery format. Students will attend 1 day per week of classroom training per fortnight and one day per week of online learning each fortnight plus 100 hour work / field placement.
Nationally Accredited within the AQTF.
The Diploma of Youth Work is designed for people who work with youth, or who want to work in the helping professions with youth. The applications for this qualification are many. Graduates typically have opportunities to work in areas such as Juvenile services, Youth Homelessness, Drug and Alcohol Services, Mental and General Health Services, Vocational Programs, Educational Programs, Community Centers, Recreational Programs, Schools and Residential Care. It is recommended that prospective students have an awareness, sensitivity and passion for issues facing young people today, or a passion for understanding these.
To gain entry students need to be recognised as competent, through accredited training or a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, or have completed relevant units from the Certificate IV in Youth Work. Alternatively students who have appropriate experience may be accepted into the course.
IKON provides Graduates with:
- Basic counselling skills
- Awareness of young people needs and tools to engage and facilitate the growth of young people
- The skills necessary to plan, run and supervise group activities
- An understanding of the roles and responsibilities of working with youth from a legal, ethical and social perspective
- Understanding necessary to work with diverse cultural groups with appropriate cultural sensitivity
The Diploma is designed to support learners who have additional time requirements, so classroom training is limited to one day per week and involves lectures, observation, role-play and discussion. In addition students will complete self directed study, which includes; research, reading, assessments, field trips and practice.
Students also undertake 100 hours of work/field placement in the youth work sector in order to integrate the skills and knowledge developed throughout classroom-facilitated sessions. For individuals already working within the sector or with appropriate experience, RPL and gap training can be provided.
