Herbal Medicine

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4 billion people--80 percent of the world population--use herbal medicine for some aspect of primary health care (Farnsworth et al., 1985). Herbal medicine is a major component in all indigenous peoples' traditional medicine and is a common element in Ayurvedic, homeopathic, naturopathic, traditional oriental, and Native American Indian medicine.

Herbal medicine has been used effectively for thousands of years to alleviate many ailments.

Today’s Herbalists undertake extensive training in Anatomy and Physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and they must study all aspects of phytomedicine. They are specifically trained to help eliminate the disease state, not just the symptoms.

A trained Herbalist will take into account any pharmaceutical medication that you are currently taking, and will not administer any herbs that can have adverse reactions with that drug. Recorded side effects of Herbal Medicine are minimal, as compared to pharmaceutical drugs, if taken as “professionally” advised. Herbs are concentrated forms of Nutrition and can help to build up the bodies strength and resistance, where chemical or synthetic based forms of medicine can diminish the immune response progressively.

As you can see Herbal Medicine has come along way from the “dark ages.” It is no longer associated with the backyard cauldron or the little old lady administering herbs from the kitchen table.

Herbalists are professional people that have studied for many years, all components of phyto -medicine and the human body.

In the clinic I use a mix of Herbs, Vitamins and Bach Flower Remedies to increase my client's energy, immune system, and general well being. Consultations usually last an hour, and during this time I include an iridology session to assist with my evaluation. I use a mix of Western, Ayurvedic and Chinese herbs depending on the person and the illness.

Disease states such as Asthma, Allergies, Arthritis, Blood Pressure, Anxiety, Chronic Fatigue, Psoriasis, Eczema, Viral illness, Acne plus many many more illnesses are addressed effectively and efficiently with herbs at the Traditional Herbal Remedies clinic.

We consider ourselves an essential part of our client’s health management team and are happy to work in conjunction with the family GP and other medical specialists. We use both medical and non-medical diagnostic methods to gain a broader understanding of the underlying causes of the client’s ill-health. These are used to identify and refine the client’s health program and to monitor their return to wellness.

"You are what you eat."
Your diet undoubtedly contributes to the way you feel. Lack of vitality and a general feeling of unwell can be the first sign of nutritional inadequacy. Todays busy lifestyles lends to high stress levels, an overabundance of "synthetic" foods & polluted air and water sources. All these factors contribute to our bodies wellbeing.

Our clinic offers clients a balanced health-care approach incorporating orthodox western medical values combined with eastern philosophy, clinical nutrition, enhanced by complementary medicine practises such as nutrition analysis (clinical nutrition), herbal medicine, kinesiology- a unique combination.
Nutritional therapy is based upon symptoms and illness patterns that your body is presenting. An Iridology & tongue examination is used to support the original diagnosis. The incorporation of these two techniques during the consultation can highlight weaknesses in the body that may not have been apparent to the patient.

Dietary requirements will be highlighted, plus vitamin and mineral therapy will be advised if found to be necessary. As Jennifer has an excellent knowledge of the active constituents of Medicinal Herbs, she can incorporate this form of treatment into the health plan. This aids to alleviate any illness pattern that has emerged and to decrease your resistance to further disease.

Iridology is the study of the colored part of the eye (called the iris) to determine potential health problems. Iridologists believe that changing patterns and markings in the iris can be used to reveal emerging conditions in every part of the body and to identify inherited weaknesses that may lead to physical and emotional disorders. Iridology is used as a preventive practice and as part of the wholistic treatment. If a health problem is detected at an early stage, something can then be done to prevent it from becoming a full-blown disease.

The idea that the eyes are a mirror to the body is an ancient one: The Greek physician Hippocrates was known to examine patients' eyes for signs of illness. It wasn't until 1670, however, that the first actual medical reference to iridology as a diagnostic tool appeared in German physician Phillipus Meyens' book Chiromatica Medica.

How Does It Work?

The basis of iridology is a wholistic concept well accepted in other fields of alternative medicine, namely that when examined correctly, each part of the body contains information about other parts of the body. Iridologists believe that as a degenerative disease slowly develops, the iris will reflect these changes.

Conventional physicians also routinely examine the eye for evidence of internal disease. Using an ophthalmoscope to look at the retina of the eye, a doctor can see how diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure are affecting blood vessels. Likewise, a close examination of the iris by a trained iridologist can give information about high cholesterol and certain metabolic ailments.

Iridologists contend that conventional physicians underutilize the iris as a source of information about an individual's health status. They point out that the iris itself is one of the most complex organs in the human body. Using an iris torch, iridologists can get a view of the ultrafine membrane of connective tissue that shows signs of degenerative diseases well before their presence is manifested in larger organs or the “symptoms” are evident on the host.

What You Can Expect

l examine the irises of your eyes using an Iris torch. (With its numerous fibers and colors, the iris is as unique as your fingerprints.) Iridology is a simple, painless and non-intrusive tool for assessing health and well-being. It can be an integral part of preventative healthcare , the examination and consultation may last an hour or longer. While examining your irises, I will look for subtle signs of developing illness, such as symptoms of stress or a build-up of toxins. I also use a technique called “mapping," where eye charts are consulted to determine problems in corresponding internal organs.

I also use herbs known to feed a particular organ or system, as well as vitamins and minerals, to enhance the body's own healing mechanisms. Even people with hopeless conditions have found relief using the information discovered through a professional Iridology examination. My goal with using iridology is to recognize health problems at their earliest stage, and to suggest ways of keeping disease from developing.

Bach Flower Remedies

In the early part of the 20th century Dr Edward Bach made a study of patients from which he concluded that harmful emotions such as fear or despair may lead to physical disease. Convinced that flowers could affect one’s state of mind he developed his flower remedies.

By holding his hand over each flower he believed that he could intuitively discern its healing properties. By 1936 Bach remedies were being made commercially.

The remedies are not intended to directly relieve the symptoms of an ailment, as they work on both a physical and emotional level. Bach divided the various moods into seven categories.

Each category is divided into 38 negative feelings. Each one of these is associated with a plant.

Bach Flower therapists are specifically trained in all aspects of the 38 flower remedies, thereby enabling patients to heal emotionally and physically.

Kinesiologists use Manual Muscle Testing as a tool in their work, which tests the function of the muscles, which in turn reflect the body's overall state of structural balance. They also recognise that there are flows of energy within the body that relate not only to the muscles, but to every tissue and organ that make the body a living being. The client is observed as a whole organism, rather than a collection of symptoms.

The Process

If you are wanting to take more responsibility for your health and are tired of just managing or suppressing your symptoms then Kinesiology is for you! Initial consultation takes approximately 1½ hours. During this time we discuss the key problem, and we find the emotional link to this predicament. We manually test a wide range of muscles that are linked directly back to different pathways and organs in the body. From here we can establish and correct the main problem that is showing, and blocking your energy flow through your body. Changes are felt instantly and do not need days of integration to take place. Let your body tell its story and be totally amazed at the end results.
