Acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine (Ayurveda) both are traditional medicine. They are based on the bio energy system in the body. Acupuncture follows the yin and yang theory and Ayurvedic medicine follows the three humours theories which are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an important and popular modality of Chinese medicine with history of almost 3000 years back. It is still used extensively today to treat literally millions of people around the world.
Traditional Acupuncturist understands health in terms of a vital force or energy called Qi.
In acupuncture treatment, ultra fine sterilized needles are inserted superficially in to specific acupoints. The fine needles are often not felt at all during insertion. If they are felt, it is usually a slight dull ache which very quickly subsides. An acupuncture treatment is very relaxing and rejuvenating. Some people fall in to sleep and afterwards feel very refreshing. Scientific research has shown that Acupuncture stimulates the natural endorphins and influences our immune and endocrine systems.
Acupuncture may be incorporated with cupping and moxibustion therapy.
Cupping involves placing warmed cups on specific acupuncture points to bring blood and energy to the surface.
It can be used on most acupuncture points to warm and stimulate energy in a patient with cold, damp condition or generally to reinforce the treatment. It is done by moxa cone or moxa stick.
What is Acupressure:
It can be used when invasive techniques are not possible. It is a simple sustained pressure on the acupoints for up to two minutes or small circulatory massaging movements with thumb or index finger or Percussion over the point with one or two fingers. It is based on proven efficacy of Acupuncture.
What is Ayurveda or Ayurvedic Medicine?
Ayurvedic medicine or Ayurveda is an ancient heeling system from India that dates back some 5,000 years. Ayurveda means ‘science of life’. It is comprehensive form of medicine that combines natural therapy and is highly personalised approach to treat the disease. It places an equal emphasis on body, mind and spirit to restore the inner harmony of the individual.
According to Ayurveda, the five elements that make up every thing in the universe are ether, air, fire, water and earth. Each element is represented in the human body. For instance, ether is the space found between matter represented best by vibration or sound, oxygen is air, the metabolism is fire, blood and lymph are water and bones are earth. These five elements pair-up to form three forces or ‘doshas’ within the body.
Vata is made up of air and ether. It is responsible for functions such as the heart beat, locomotion and the working of the nervous system. Too much vata can leads to symptoms such as high blood pressure, while too little can cause constipation.
Pitta is made up of fire and water. It is responsible for functions such as digestion and body temperature. Too much pitta can result in symptoms such as ulcers and acne, while too little can end up in indigestion.
Kapha is made up of water and earth. It is responsible for immunity. Too much kapha can cause running nose or productive cough while too little can causes poor concentration.
A balance among the tridosha is necessary for health and wellbeing. Together, the tridosha governs all metabolic activities. When their actions in our mind & body constitution are balanced, we experience psychological and physiological wellness. When they are unbalanced, we may feel uneasy and sick.
An Ayurvedic practitioner aims to balance the patient doshas in order to increase their life energy or ‘prana’. We take up prana from the food we eat and air we breathe. Food can affect a person’s dosha levels because food is also made up of the five basic elements.
An Ayurvedic practioner uses a range of therapy from Ayurveda to balance the dosha and increase the energy (prana) level. Such as herbs, therapeutic (Ayurvedic) massage, Marma therapy, diet, yoga and Pranayam (breathing exercise).
Herbs are important component of Ayurvedic medicine. Herbs stimulate to feel more energetic, improved sleep and help to restore balance to certain organs and organ systems. Once the underlying imbalance is addressed, the body is able to heel itself and then maintain that state with balanced approach to diet and yoga.

Marma is the important pressure points on the body, much like the acupuncture points. One hundred and seven sensitive anatomical points are on the body. The marma point is defined as anatomical site where muscle, vein, ligament, bone and joints meet together. This does not mean that all the structures must be present collectively at the site of marma. The most important difference between acupuncture points and marma is the size and they are not related to meridians. Marmas are connected to the chakras and are used for balancing both body and mind. Marma point is treated by massage and pressure.
