About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a time honoured medical practice whose origins can be traced back at least 2000 years. In the modern world it has gained widespread international acceptance and is used by people from a wide and diverse range of social and cultural backgrounds. Acupuncture is one component of Chinese medicine. It is the result of a continuous process of critical thinking, extensive clinical observation & testing, and the repeated and thorough formulation and reformulation of medical material by centuries of practitioners and theoreticians. It is also, however, rooted in the philosophy, logic, and sensibilities of a civilisation entirely foreign to our own. Subsequently, it has developed its own perceptions and concepts of illness and health.

As a natural form of healing, acupuncture has the following benefits:

  • provides drug-free pain relief

  • effectively treats a wide range of acute and chronic ailments

  • treats the underlying cause of disease and illness as well as the symptom

  • provides an holistic approach to the treatment of disease and illness, linking mind, body and emotions

  • assists in the prevention against disease, as well as the maintenance of
      general wellbeing.

About Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs are often used in conjunction with acupuncture for added therapeutic effect. While many cultures have herbal medicine traditions, the sophistication of Chinese herbal medicine is unsurpassed. Chinese herbal medicine has a long history reaching back several thousand years, and can be used to address everything from the common cold to migraines and menstrual irregularities.

About Other Modalities

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves the heating of acupuncture points with smoldering mugwort herb (known as moxa). Moxibustion stimulates circulation, counteracts cold and dampness in the body, and promotes the smooth flow of blood and qi. This safe, non-invasive technique may be used alone, but it is generally used in conjunction with acupuncture treatment.

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient technique, used in many cultures, in which a special cup is applied to the skin and held in place by suction. The suction draws superficial tissue into the cup, which may either be left in place or moved along the body. Cupping brings fresh blood to the area and helps improve circulation.

Scraping Guasha

In principle, scraping is just like cupping. A practitioner drags a small flat scraper, made of animal horn or jade, down the patient’s body. Tiny reddish bumps appear on the skin, which are the sha that makes up half of this treatment’s Chinese name, guasha. Scraping taps the body’s meridian system, opening up capillaries and stimulates blood flow. A practitioner can target ailments in a specific organ—say, the lung—by scraping along its corresponding meridian (in this case, on the arm). It may be used clinically for many different conditions, for example fevers, chesty coughs, pain, fatigue, facial rejuvenation.
