Since starting my midwifery career something that has struck me is how unprepared some women are for labour and birth, either because they just didn't want to know or, more often, they didn't know they COULD know. Only a few hundred years ago we used to watch our mothers, sisters, aunts, and cousins give birth, so when it came to our turn we understood what was happening. Now childbirth is done almost in secret, behind closed (sterile, hospital) doors. Often our only experience is what we have seen on TV, where situations are over-sensualised to create a good story, or we hear stories from our friends or work colleagues, and everyone loves to tell a good 'shock and awe' story! Birth has become scary for some, or at the very least, something to be 'endured'.

I really believe that knowledge is power. Labour and birth is a time in a family's life to be celebrated and cherished. Women should feel empowered when they give birth – it is a momentous thing to do! But sometimes things do not always go according to plan. If you are prepared for what could happen, you will be better prepared to make a decision, and sometimes during labour and birth decisions need to be made quickly.

As often as possible I will provide you with evidence based information, although sometimes there just isn’t good quality evidence available, as well as 'real life' experiences, to help you make these decisions. In no situation am I telling you you HAVE to do something a certain way, it is up to you to make your own decisions.
