Fertility Support with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine has traditionally been used to improve fertility in China and parts of East Asia for thousands of years. This method of fertility support is also increasingly popular in the West, in particular when used in conjunction with IVF or other assisted reproductive treatments. Some scientific studies are showing promising results in this area especially when acupuncture is combined with IVF. However, please note that we do not yet have large scale clinical studies to prove that acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine can treat infertility, therefore our treatments are based on current scientific evidence, our experience and the experience of many Chinese Medicine doctors before us.
Preconception Care
Giving your baby the best start in life starts before you even conceive. Preconception care ideally should start at least three months before conception and involves both parents. Positive changes you can undertake at home include stopping the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs, taking prenatal vitamins, eating a healthy and well balanced diet, exercise, and avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals and environments.
If you have a pre-existing condition that may impact conception and/or pregnancy then a more tailored Acupuncture/ Chinese Medicine program under a well trained practitioner may be required. Sometimes combining conventional treatments and Acupuncture can improve your chances of conceiving.
Elemental Chinese Medicine offers preconception care using acupuncture, herbal medicine and lifestyle advice to increase your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby. Our practitioners are experienced in this area as we see patients (both female and male) on a daily basis with fertility issues.
Our preconception care programs includes an initial detailed consultation followed by a series of either twice weekly, weekly or fortnightly treatments to address any underlying issues. For people having problems conceiving a treatment period of 3-6 months is recommended. During your treatment progress will be monitored by charting your menstrual cycle and other laboratory tests and indicators.
IVF Support
Using acupuncture in combination with IVF or other forms of assisted reproductive technologies may improve your chances of success.
IVF support protocol:
We follow a standard clinically trialed IVF Acupuncture protocol for our patients undergoing IVF. A course of acupuncture treatments is given prior to embryo transfer to prepare your body for the procedure. At embryo transfer one treatment of acupuncture will be given at least 24 hours before the transfer and another treatment will be given as soon as possible after the transfer to increase the chances of implantation. Studies by (Margarelli P et al, 2009) have shown that this protocol may increase the success rate by 65%.
Another treatment is given one week after the transfer to calm the nerves and support the well being of the mother. Treatments will then focus on supporting your pregnancy if the implantation is successful. In the unfortunate event of you needing to complete another cycle of IVF the treatment focus will be on getting your body ready for the next cycle.
Pregnancy Acupuncture
Pregnancy is an exciting period in your life but it also places a lot of demands on your body and mind. Acupuncture may be used to support the pregnant woman to alleviate some pregnancy symptoms like stress, aches and pains, and support labour preparation. Our practitioners are also experienced in providing pregnancy support and labour preparation.
Postnatal Support
In China and other parts of East Asia a woman enjoys one month of rest and care after giving birth. That is because the Chinese recognise that the post birth period is vital to ensure complete recovery from the birthing process and the future health of mother and baby. Chinese herbs are used in this period to replenish lost blood and energy, to promote healing and good milk supply. Acupuncture may also be used if required.
General Women’s Health
Menstrual irregularities, painful periods, PMT symptoms and menopausal symptoms may all benefit from Acupuncture and/or Chinese Herbal Medicine. The menstrual cycle is a key part of female health and wellbeing, and Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have traditionally been used to help regulate and balance the menstrual cycle. Treatments will be customised to treat each phase of your menstrual cycle and you’ll be guided on understanding what should happen in each phase and what signs to look for to determine if things are normal or not.
