Five Element Acupuncture is based on ancient Eastern philosophies dating back to 200BC. The 5 elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. This theory was developed by observing the nature, such as the seasonal cycle. The elements give birth to one another and control each other to maintain balance and harmony. The 5 element exists inside of us physically, mentally and spiritually. Having a balance of the 5 elements within us is to be in harmony with the nature outside.

It is believed that each person has a constitutional trait to one of these elements, and has a particular relationship to it. This element is acquired from birth or early stages of life and can be our natural strength as well as weakness. From the imbalance of this one element the whole 5 element cycle loses harmony, and diseases begin to manifest.

“A person is not sick because of a disease. They are diseased because they are sick.”
- Su Wen

Therefore the primary objective of the treatment is to rebalance these energies. Instead of attempting to tackle each symptom separately, by treating the person at the root of the constitution the person will experience true healing. The body has a magnificent ability to heal itself. Strengthening the whole system will assist the body to heal itself, without interference.

The focus is on the person with the symptoms, as opposed to the symptoms of the person.

A symptom, such as headache, can be seen as the way body tries to alert us that there is something wrong. Simply eliminating the headache is only silencing that alarm. Pain may have subsided but underlying cause is ignored. Everyone can have similar symptoms but the cause and/or the way it affects each individual can be different. Each person is a unique being and requires personalised care and attention.

“Acupuncture should be, first and foremost, based upon the Spirit.”
- Ling Shu, Chpt. 8

Much of the focus is put on the spirit of the person. This is, the childhood experiences of the person as well as the way the person copes with everyday stress. This is a truly wholistic form of healing directed at the root cause of all diseases. Acupuncture can help with any presenting symptoms, but it can be especially effective for emotional problems such as stress, depression and anxiety.

Thin and sterile needles are used and are rarely retained in the body. One can expect immediate change from the first session, however it may take up to 7 weekly sessions for an effective and long lasting recovery. After the initial treatments, each sessions last for approximately 45 minutes.

Below are some key questions each element may seek answers to and an acupuncture point that may help the element.
