Acupuncture originated in China more than 5000 years ago and is part of integrated system of primary health care, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Of all the traditional treatment systems available in Australia, acupuncture is by far the most respected and has achieved wide-spread acceptance as an effective form of health care, including formal recognition by the World Health Organization (more detail -.http://apps.who.int/medicinedocs/en/d/Js4926e/)
Acupuncture is a safe and effective natural healing therapy that works by stimulating points on the body with gentle needle techniques and/or heat (moxibustion). The aim is to promote metabolic functions and restore homeostasis or balance.
A frequent reported "side-effect" of acupuncture is an incresed level of relaxation. It is suggested that acupuncture directly increases the amount of serotonin in the hypothalamus - the part of the brain responsible for emotion. This may explain the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating anxiety, pain and mood disorders i.e depression where serotonin depletion is the likely cause of the associated symtoms.
